Petition pays off for Cure fans Posted: Wed Jun 13, 2007 5:16 pm Alternative rock act The Cure is coming to New Zealand thanks to a petition organised by a couple of diehard New Plymouth fans. The organisers of a petition to bring the legendary UK band to New Zealand have succeeded in persuading the Cure to add New Zealand to the Australian leg of its tour. New Plymouth Cure fans Alastair Ross and Gordon Pitcairn had organised an online and nationwide record store petition in a bid to bring the band to New Zealand, and a comment by frontman Robert Smith on the band's website all but confirmed it will be heading to the country for a concert in August. Official confirmation will be made today, but Mr Ross said they were ecstatic about the news. A story run recently by the Taranaki Daily News helped the petition gain momentum. "We were sitting on about 200 signatures with the online petition, and after the story ran it climbed to about 800 overnight. "It also featured on Fairfax's Stuff website and that is when things went crazy. We still have some petitions from stores around the country to collect in, but all up we have about 3000 signatures," he said. "We thought a petition could work and were confident that we could gain the Cure's attention, but when Gordon and I found out, we were jumping around the room with excitement. "It is unbelievable that a petition could make that kind of impact when the Cure is so far away." More Info |
