PITCH BLACK FIDDLE WITH RUDE MECHANICALS
Posted: Tue Jul 10, 2007 4:57 pm
Long nights of sleep deprivation, unshaven Neanderthals seen lurching through Kingsland shops, it can only mean one thing - Pitch Black must be finishing another album....... They are! It’s called "Rude Mechanicals", and its going to be out in New Zealand on August 6th, and the rest of the world thereafter (see below for details).

Their fourth studio album contains nine tracks in their usual mash-up of styles from 0 to 170 bpm with bottom end to test even the hardiest of speakers, bits you never knew were there before, and general stereophonic goodness riding on the carrier wave of dub. Pitch Black are currently putting the finishing touches to the mix up at Kog studios and getting ready to tour throughout New Zealand in August. Then they're off to Europe, the US and Australia in September, and then back to the US and Japan in late November/ December. Phew!

Since their initial meeting in 1996, Mike and Paddy have shared the stage with acts such as Coldcut, Kraftwerk and Underworld and have rocked everywhere from small basement clubs to massive stadiums. They have released three albums; three remix discs, and embarked on six world tours. Pitch Black songs have been included on many international compilations, film soundtracks, and they recently licensed tracks for use on CSI: Miami and just completed all the music for a Sony PSP game called CUBE. Paddy has been working on his solo album and creating soundtracks for local contemporary dancers, and Mike has been travelling the world with his multimedia work.

The band toured Japan for the second time in May, they love it there; the people, the vibe, the food! No where else could you play a Dubstep/D&B party one night and a Hard House one the next and get an equally wicked audience response. While they were in Tokyo the guys worked on a collaboration and remix swap with local band Sun Paulo. They are a three-piece combination of 70s funk, Hendrix and Techno - yes really! You can check them out at http://myspace.com/sunpaulo

Pitch Black are looking forward to getting these new tracks out of the studio and into the world. See you on the dancefloor soon.....

‘Old Farts’ & ‘Young Upstarts’ take to the road with Rude Mechanicals

Pitch Black will be touring their new album Rude Mechanicals around the country in August with support from Module and Tom COSM in most centers. “If we are the Old Farts, these guys are the Young Upstarts of live electronica in New Zealand!” says Paddy. “They both can absolutely rock a crowd, and it’s great to have a night of live, original electronic music.” Pitch Black will be bringing their trademark real time video show to deliver the full-sensory experience that has always been central to their gigs - No accusations of email-checking or "just pressing play" for these men!

Even though the band is known for its cross-genre approach to electronica, the Rude Mechanicals album sees Pitch Black casting their net even wider than their previous outings Futureproof, Electronomicon and Ape to Angel.

Ranging from periods of atmospheric ambience to skankin’ dub, through to stomping drum n bass, the album also features vocal contributions from KP, Brother J, and Lisa Z. Apparently, Pitch Black only work with people with at least one initial in their name.

KP, of Sunshine Sound System fame, lays down an ecologically-themed rhyme and uplifting chorus on the title track. “All the guys in the Sunshine Sound System have been our close friends for years” say Paddy. “We toured around Europe with them in 2002, and shared many adventures, including the van breaking down in the middle of nowhere on the border between France and Germany.” “A night in the company of the Sunshine Sound System is a guarantee of a vibey, uplifting time - and KP brings that to this track” says Mike.

Paddy’s former bandmate from mid-90s electronica band Mesh, Brother J, contributes a typically enigmatic vocal on rootsy 4/4 stomper 1000 Mile Drift, while Auckland-based jazz vocalist Tracy Z’s ethereal vocals float through the skittery beats and ambient wash of album closer Please Leave Quietly. “We thought this would be a good track to be played at the end of a Drum n Bass night, hence the title” says Mike. “Its a track that’s both heavy and ambient at the same time. You could definitely drop it as the final let-go after a night of hard out Drum n Bass.”

Following the New Zealand tour, Pitch Black will be heading immediately overseas for gigs to support the world wide album release in England, Austria, Spain, Croatia, and Australia, with gigs in the USA and Japan in late November.

Pitch Black’s new album Rude Mechanicals is to hit the shops on August 6th.
