Beach Boys Posted: Thu Jul 12, 2007 3:33 pm Dust off those floral shirts - the Beach Boys are on surfari to Auckland and New Plymouth. The Beach Boys, whose careers took flight in the heady days of the surfing craze hitting California - and Taranaki - in the 1960s will play at the TSB Stadium on Saturday, November 17 and November 18 at the Vector Arena, Auckland. The Beach Boys will be fronted by lead singer Mike Love and Bruce Johnson and promise to play classics from their huge line-up, which includes California Girls, Good Vibrations, Wouldn't It Be Nice, Surfin' USA, Kokomo, Help Me Rhonda and Barbara Ann. Two of the original Beach Boys, Wilson brothers Dennis and Carl, have died. Brian Wilson and Alan Jardine continue to pursue solo careers. Christopher Cross, of Sailing and Arthur's Theme fame, will kick off the concert. Already hyped up, New Plymouth Mayor Peter Tennent says his family will be among the first to line up for tickets in the wake of his misspent youth at Fitzroy Beach. "I'm no different from half the region, growing up loving the Beach Boys' songs and partying to them." And what better place for the Beach Boys to play than the surf capital of New Zealand? Venture Taranaki events development manager Garry Sharpe-Young said the Beach Boys were planning a big beach party, palm trees included, as the theme for the tour. The deal was clinched after the Beach Boys' Australian promoter Andrew McManus was lured to New Plymouth in May and given the "royal tour", Venture Taranaki chief executive Stuart Trundle said. McManus was suitably impressed with both the venue and the teamwork - hence the Beach Boys' contract. http://www.stuff.co.nz/4125374a4500.html |
