The Brunettes Posted: Tue Jul 17, 2007 4:04 pm Because time flies when you're having fun, you probably hadn't realised that NZ’s indie sweethearts, The Brunettes have been around for almost a decade now. From playing shows in theatres where the candy floss machine was mandatory, to the release of their debut album ‘Holding Hands, Feeding Ducks in 2002 to the formation of a twenty member, multi-instrumental supergroup at the 2006 Big Day Out, being signed to the world’s super indie-label ‘Sub Pop’ and touring with indie luminaries as The Postal Service, The Go-Betweens, The Shins, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Rilo Kiley throughout North America and the UK, even finding favour with Britain’s notoriously fickle NME along the way! This brings us to “Structure & Cosmetics”, The Brunettes’ third and arguably best album. Recorded in Los Angeles, Portland (with some help from new label mates The Shins), New York and Auckland, there are songs about aliens, teen idols and hair care products, amongst other things. Film Makers Trophy Wife have just completed a romantic-comedy-drama- art piece video for the first single ‘Her Hairagami Set’. The video tells the dark tale of beauty and victims finding love. The story is told using handmade marionettes and sets, playing out within a girls’ comic book fantasy world. Structure & Cosmetics will be released on July 30th in New Zealand on Lil’ Chief Records via Rhythmethod distribution. The release of their third album will be celebrated with three shows: - 10 Aug - Wellington @ San Francisco Bath House - 11 Aug - Palmerston North @ Bar Mode - 17 Aug - Auckland @ Kings Arms Tavern Catch them before they go stateside with their North American tour hand in hand with their album release on the fabulous Sub Pop label. Tickets will be available from Real Groovy stores in Auckland and Wellington and from Mango Music in Palmerston North. “(Her Hairagami Set is a) lush vine-network of instrumentation, with Heather Mansfield's charmingly cooed litany of hairdos” - pitchfork.com “The Brunettes have staked a major claim on U.S. hearts with their ridiculously catchy hooks, Mansfield's eyelash-batting coyness and Bree's droll delivery.” - Mars Loves Venus Review: Harp – Oct/Nov 2005 |
