OneFest Series - Part Five

PHELPS & MUNRO, THE BENGAL LIGHTS, w/ SONIC SMITH, KOTAC, DJ HUGH KAPOW - FRIDAY 14th September - THE BACKSTAGE

There’s no rest for the wickedness that is THE ONEFEST SERIES. We’ve brewed up one of the most ass-kicking FREE line ups in modern history.

We’re putting the spring back in your shoes for this one. Gerald Phillips, a.k.a PHELPS & MUNRO ventures out of his bedroom laboratory & flies south to fry your motherboard. Think human C-64. His live show is nothing short of an aural extravaganza. Dubbed NZ’s king of the MPC 2000, this is a chap that has shared the stage with international luminaries like Amon Tobin & Kid 606. His debut album 'Slowpoke' on Round Trip Mars came out of nowhere to seduce both guitar fans and electronica boffins alike. Expect more of the same live.

Two piece THE BENGAL LIGHTS, also hailing from the big AK, present primal, attitude- drenched, fun, non-conformist punk rock n’ roll. Displaying an uncanny symbiotic connection, Zoe & Maeve’s live set borders on telepathic musical witchery. With a string of bNet hits already hanging from their belts (Pony Prance & Black-Jean Surly) these two know how to work a crowd into a foot stomping indie frenzy. They impressed us so much on the A Low Hum tour through Dunedin last year we thought it was high time Radio One got them back down south.

Dunedinite SoNIC SMITH first entered the world of Electronic music around the age of 11 when he found a music program hiding on a 3 1/4 inch floppy disk for his Amiga 500. Filled with knowledge that comes only from a life time of tech geekery, Smith pulls out loving, raspy, distorted synths and glitchy suprises rolled into eclectic soundscapes.

Local wonder-kids KOTAC (Kitten of the Acid Cutter for those in the know) sprung from the ashes of the hugely popular Zan Batman Circus. Winners of the 2007 OUSA Battle Of The Bands – the dancefloor certainly agrees – these kids know how to make things go wiggly. Tune your heels to the cowbell, bust out some plastic bling & twist it to one of Dunedin’s most promising new bands.

And plugging the gaps, DJ HUGH KAPOW certainly knows how to sew the grooves into a musical patchwork quilt of aural delight and warmth. You can tune into him regularly on Radio One’s Wednesday Fortune Theatre Drive show. We decided it was time for him to sport his wares at the club.
