Dynamic Cuban MC Hosts Unique Celebration for Wellington.

(October 1 2007, Wellington) Cuban culture comes alive in Wellington on Thursday October 11th with a huge celebration at Latinos Bar hosted by Cuban musician Jinetero MC to commemorate "Grito de Yara", the 10-year war for independence and liberation.

Bringing together a variety of successful local musicians, "Libertad" will be the first time such an important event is staged in Wellington. With the city's continuing love affair with all things Cuban, plus unprecedented demand for more appearances from the featured artists, the night provides a rare opportunity to experience a truly Cuban celebration of freedom.

Jinetero MC came to Wellington from Cuba in 2004 and has worked with several top groups including Olmecha Supreme, Homefire Burning and the legendary Upper Hutt Posse. In collaboration with Trespeso Music, he is bringing the Cuban Reggaeton style to New Zealand, delivering fast-paced lyrics and high energy that is a guaranteed crowd pleaser and leaves audiences enthralled. "Libertad" is an event that Jinetero MC wanted to present to Wellington as a way of paying tribute to his Cuban roots while collaborating with local talent to create a very special night for everyone.

"In Cuba, the energy is very spontaneous and infectious", says Jinetero MC, "and I want people here to experience how great it is when talented musicians come together to celebrate our freedom and have a party."

Others in the line-up include the talented Imon Star, Matiu, Hannah Howes, The Volunteers, Taku MC, and fresh from the highly successful Ubantu concert for Darfur, Sam Manzanza and the Rhythm Band. But as Jinetero MC points out, in true Cuban spontaneity there will be many more artists taking the stage throughout the night to jam with each other and keep the party for "Grito de Yara" in full swing.

On October 10, 1868, under the leadership of attorney Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the Cuban people began their struggle for independence from Spain, whose colonial rule had lasted 4 centuries. Calling for liberty and independence, Céspedes attacked the small town of Yara on October 11, from which this revolution took its name. In 1878 the Ten Years' War (1868-187Cool ended with a number of reforms, the most significant was to free all slaves who had fought Spain. The October 10 date is commemorated in Cuba as a national holiday under the name "Grito de Yara" ("Shout of Yara"), and is the impetuous for the event taking place at Latinos Bar on Thursday 11 October.

Jinetero MC presenta Libertad! 8pm, Thursday 11 October at Latinos Bar, Cnr Tory and Vivian Sts, with tickets only $10 at the door.
