Rhythm and Vines 3rd Announcement Posted: Mon Oct 8, 2007 5:04 pm Rhythm & Vines, New Zealand's most popular New Year's Eve festival is pleased to announce the addition of European dance acts New Young Pony Club, M.A.N.D.Y., and DJ T to its huge lineup. NZ music royalty Hollie Smith and Scribe and kiwi music icon Don McGlashan have also been revealed as performers for this year's festival. Rhythm & Vines' 3rd Lineup announcement comprises the following acts: New Young Pony Club (UK) Scribe Hollie Smith Don McGlashan M.A.N.D.Y. (Germany) DJ T (Germany) State Of Mind feat MC Twincam North Shore Pony Club Automatic & Rik Blake It is not without reason that Rhythm & Vines has become New Zealand's number one festival destination for New Year's Eve. Four stages and over 30 acts provide ample eye and ear-candy, and fun stuff like a 50m waterslide, ambient lake chillout zone and the impressive midnight pyrotechnics show guarantee an experience that only Rhythm & Vines can provide. What started as a whim of three Otago Uni students in 2003 and a small event with 1,500 in attendance has come a long way in five years to become one of New Zealand's premiere festivals. One of RV's biggest draw cards is the venue. Waiohika Estate in Gisborne is an operating vineyard with hills, valleys and natural contours that afford spectacular views and acoustic isolation for all of the stages. Market and food stalls are easy to access, with heaps on offer, and exploring the site with all of its little suprises is one of the most enjoyable parts of the festival. Flushing toilets are also a big plus! Last year the festival sold out 16,000 tickets months in advance. This year, with an increased capacity, the demand for tickets is already even stronger. Early-bird "Pruning" and "Budburst" tickets have sold out. "Harvest" tickets, available through Ticketmaster are flying out the door. BIOS: New Young Pony Club are a five piece indie/electronica band from London, England. Taking influences from new wave bands such as Talking Heads and Blondie, and combining them with fresh hot dance rhythms, they are perhaps more deserving of the ironic "New Rave" tag. It all started with their cult hit "Ice Cream." Their album Fantastic Playroom has garnered overwhelming positive reviews, as well as their new single "The Bomb". The main source of stage presence of this must-see band is front-woman Tahita Bulmer, whose energetic performance and dancing encourages the crowd. For NYPC it's all about getting the audience up on their feet and moving: "This is not a dress rehearsal," Ms. Bulmer declares. "This is life. Do you want to think of yourself on your deathbed standing at an amazing gig drinking a pint and trying to look cool?” Pat Bo and Phil Young of the DJ-duo M.A.N.D.Y. are some of the most heavily booked house-DJs in Germany. Associated with super-club Monza, which started out in Frankfurt and later opened in London and Ibiza, these fun-seeking boys deliver foot-stomping, crowd-rousing sets. Over the past five years M.A.N.D.Y. have cemented their international reputation as producers and DJs. Their label Get Physical released its first compilation in 2004, but it was their collaboration with Booka Shade, ‘Body Language’, which became a dance anthem across the globe, voted Ibiza’s Track of the Season and DJ Magazine’s Track of the Year for 2005. This was followed by the ‘Body Language Vol. 1’ mix CD – DJ Magazine’s Mix CD of the Year - wherein Philipp and Patrick joined the dots between electro-influenced house and disco and the prevalent minimal techno sound In 2006 came M.A.N.D.Y.’s contribution to the ‘At The Controls’ mix series – a double CD which flitted effortlessly between genres and which showed a more sensuous side to the M.A.N.D.Y. sound without compromising their underground, electronic house edge. The mix picked up a host of awards, including Mix CD of the Year from Resident Advisor, BBC Essential Mix and Mixmag in the UK. One of M.A.N.D.Y.'s best mates Thomas Koch, better known as DJ T. is also on his way down to Gisborne for New Year's Eve. A legendary house DJ in his own right, he also founded and ran Germany’s iconic Groove magazine for over a decade. And the dude can breakdance! Scribe is New Zealand's number one hip-hop talent. Scribe's new album Rhymebook has just hit the street. The first single off the album, "My Shit" is already pumping across commercial airwaves in New Zealand, and Scribe looks forward to a big upcoming Aussie tour, co-headlining with Talib Kweli. Of Samoan descent, he was born in Christchurch, and grew up as a fan of rap music. As a youth he developed his rapping skills with local group Beats n' Peaces and Polynesian theatre company Pacific Underground. His guest appearance on P-Money's Big Things album started the ball rolling, and his first album The Crusader chiseled his name into the history of NZ music with the success of the singles "Stand Up" and "Not Many". Hollie Smith stole the nation’s heart when she sang Don McGlashan's instant classic "Bathe in the River." Her highly anticipated debut album Long Player stormed the New Zealand charts this year, entering at Number 1 and rapidly achieved platinum status. Hollie's extrordinary soulful voice, replete with jazz inflections, together with her writing talents were the perfect package, and she was snapped up by the illustrious New York-based label Blue Note. Her work with renowned American producers will be followed by a tour of Australia, America, UK, France and Canada. Taking everyone back to the golden years of NZ music is the one and only Don McGlashan. McGlashan is a New Zealand singer/musician whose work in such bands as The Plague, From Scratch, The Whizz Kids, Blam Blam Blam, The Front Lawn, and The Mutton Birds shaped New Zealand music. One of New Zealand's favorite songwriters, he has five entries in APRA's "NZ's Top 100 Songs Of All Time." He won the 1994 APRA Silver Scroll songwriting award for Anchor Me, which was originally performed by The Mutton Birds, and later re-recorded by a collective of top NZ musos in 2005 to mark the 20th anniversary of the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior. Don's new solo album 'Warm Hand' is available now, on Arch Hill Records, and his new band The Seven Sisters has been touring nationally. State of Mind are the new face of drum 'n bass in New Zealand. The young DJ-producer-duo of Patrick Hawkins and Stu Maxwell have an impressive and fast growing roster of national and overseas vinyl releases. ‘Sun King’ has received the heaviest play from all their records and topped record store sales charts around the world for 2005 (including number one seller for Austria). State Of Mind host the 95BFM drum ‘n’ bass show ‘Next Level’. Auckland's own North Shore Pony Club bring their “bastard disco blender” to Rhythm & Vines. This genre-bending live electronic DJ act who have been hatching astute dance music since 2005. Their single “Computer Games” has been featured on prime-time MTV UK, and they gave their London fans a lot to cheer for in their pumping set at the recent New Zealand-themed Endeavor concert. Automatic and Rik Blake once where members of Kog Transmission Sound System, they toured up and down the country like a gang of infamous outlaws wowing patrons with never seen before visuals attached to tunes that really got the party going. Five years on, it is a very rare opportunity to see these two in action, as Rik doesn't VJ for just anyone or anything, he rather it be for a very special occasion, and he deems this festival as one of these times. Rhythm & Vines current lineup also includes: Blue King Brown (AU) Concord Dawn The Mint Chicks The Checks dDub Jakob The Tutts Die Die Die Dick Johnson Aural Trash (Greg Churchill & Angela Fiskin) Cyril Orson DJ Philippa Motocade The Have The Electric Confectionaires Charlie Ash Blackbird Tropical Downbeat Orchestra BrazilBeat Sound System Ben Throp Trio Skankamelia Dubdoubt An Emerald City |
