The Parihaka International Peace Festival
Friday 11 January – Sunday 13 January 2008

Over fifty volunteers are currently on-site, preparing the land for the third annual Parihaka International Peace Festival, which kicks off at noon on Friday, concluding on Sunday evening.

The festival, alongside the historic pa in South Taranaki, celebrates the vision and example of Parihaka founders Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi, and the openness of the people of Parihaka to advocate non-violent action in the face of oppressive forces and daunting odds. The festival organisers believe that their a vision can help forge a culture of peace and non-violence throughout the world, now and into the future.

This year’s festival will focus upon the issues of Peace, Justice and Eco Responsibility, and will celebrate diversity, dignity and cultural heritage. Artists to appear will include Cornerstone Roots, dDub, the Emma Paki Band, Hollie Smith, Katchafire, Ladi 6, Little Bushman, Moana & The Tribe, Opensouls, Unity Pacific Reggae Band, and many more. Two Australian acts, Dynamic Thrills and Yeshe & The World Citizens, will also perform.

As in the previous festivals, three stages will feature throughout the weekend, including the Rongomau Electronic Music & Visual Art Space Zone. Other attractions include a Film Forum, a Speakers’ Forum, extensive children’s entertainment, and a Healing Zone.

E-tickets can be purchased from www.parihaka.com until Thursday afternoon – three-day passes (adults) are priced $150, $10 for children under 13, and $20 for seniors 60-plus; Gate Sales are $175, $10 and $25 respectively. Day Passes (Sunday only) will also be available.

Parihaka Pa is situated on Parihaka Road, between Rahuto and Pungarehu on State Highway 45.
