Guitar-rock mavericks Holster are pouring on a new round of warm vibrations for their ever-growing fan base in the southern regions of New Zealand. On the back of a successful South Island tour and recent, critically acclaimed performances from lead-singer/songwriter Gareth James in local hot-spot SOL Square, the go-getting group of twenty-something’s are making waves with a fresh take on Indie rock. The Christchurch-based four-piece have recently collaborated with elite members of the local music industry in acclaimed South Island producer, Ian McAllister (Salmonella Dub), and Golden Horse drummer Nick Gaffeney to formulate the sound of their debut studio album, currently in the making.

The Holster sound is one of intricately layered guitar-rock. James takes the lead, flexing talented vocals and harmonies. The guitars: an interwoven stream of melodic leads, mixing acoustics with liquefying Fenders and Firebirds. Impeccable drums provided by the rhythmically inclined Nick Gaffeney (Golden Horse, Cairo Knife Fight) provide a catchy backdrop for the rest of the groups’ performance. Holsters first single, The Pretender delicately mixes vocal harmonies and harrowing effects with a catchy melody. But the band is quick to stay clear of pigeonholing their music. “We want to use every instrument we can get our hands on”, claims guitarist Matt Murfitt. “We have so many more songs to build, sounds to use, I would love to use an Armenian duduk but I‘m not sure that we have a cultural licence for that”, he jokes.

With many fans proudly proclaiming the local rockers as the next thing notable, they may be onto something. The group have recently attracted sponsorship interest from commercial heavyweights, including elite international audio brand KV2.

Holster are embarking on a National tour later in the year, joining Donald Reid for a collection of North Island shows.

Holster are playing on Saturday, February 9th at Yellow Cross in Sol Square.
