Marystaple announce national tour
Posted: Sun Mar 2, 2008 10:50 am
After 3 years since the independently released ‘Shotgun’ EP, and over 2 years since their last live gig, Wellington rock band Marystaple have resurfaced and announced a nationwide tour in support of their debut album 'No Need To Be Nervous'.

Marystaple are a hard one to place. Though rising to prominence amidst a burgeoning landscape of Wellington rock (Shihad, Weta, HLAH, Letterbox Lambs, Fur Patrol), this 4 piece, hailing from suburban Porirua, never really belonged to a particular stable. Perhaps due to the fact they were significantly younger than their guitar band compatriots at the time, or perhaps because they never really held it together long enough to deliver an album that would put them on the map.

At their root, Marystaple are a raw, loud rock band capable of bringing a room to a standstill through the delivery of truly engaging performance, and their fair share of thunderclap and lightening strike, however this comes to be expected from a band growing up to Shihad, Weta etc The difficulty in placing Marystaple is perhaps more due to an uncanny song writing ability that has hooked the most precious of ears. You won’t be alone if your ringing ears are accompanied by lingering tunes 3 days after a Marystaple gig. Their sound has been compared favourably to new and old artists alike, from Howlin’ Wolf to Kings Of Leon, Led Zep to QOTSA, Bob Dylan to Elliot Smith, Fleetwood Mac to Sonic Youth.

The Marystaple live show has seen them support NZ acts such as Shihad, The Datsuns, The D4, Pluto, Goodshirt, Garageland, Betchadupa and HDU, as well as international acts such as The Superjesus, Grinspoon, and plenty of others at The Big Day out.

Off stage, Marystaple are a bunch of relatively normal guys. Good friends from high school, who had reasonable upbringings and came to playing music through standard avenues. From the bedroom, to the garage, to the stage. Unlike most rock bands, you’ll be hard pressed to find a pair of skinny jeans amongst them, you definitely won’t need sniffer dogs at the airport, and you’ll more than likely find Marystaple enjoying a drink in the audience before they take the stage. No smoke filled entrance to choreographed theme music in sight.

Some people might remember Marystaple for radio hits 'Labouror' and 'Newdog' from their debut EP 'Reset Speed'. The former receiving high rotate during the days of Channel Z, and featuring as one of only few NZ tracks on 2003’s 'Channel Z Up Loud' compilation, the latter gaining airplay across both commercial and student radio in NZ and Australia.

Their debut album, 'No Need To Be Nervous', was recorded and mixed at Kog Studios during 2007 by Tui nominated engineer Dave Holmes, and mastered at Sterling Sound in NYC by mastering luminary Greg Calbi whose impressive discography boasts Kings Of Leon, Sonic Youth, Interpol, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, & The Spice Girls. Whilst it has been an long time between drinks, the word on the street is that Marystaple have delivered, with an album of songs that will surprise many, from a band that has only hinted at its potential to date.

Hitting the road with Marystaple is Canadia, or Ashley Noel Hinton as his mother knows him. Canadia used to play rock music in a Dunedin band Gestalt Switch, but he became obsessed with miniaturisation and portability while reading a Children’s Annual 1976 article about Japan. So “the band” got packed into his laptop, and his guitar setup got smaller and more portable. Sometimes so portable that he doesn’t bother to bring his own gear and just borrows someone else’s. No longer a resident rocker and student moocher in Dunedin, Canadia now bases his rocking and student
mooching in Auckland.

'No Need To Be Nervous' Tour Dates are as follows:

- March 25 Wellington, Bar Bodega w/ Canadia
- March 26 Palmerston North, Bar Mode w/ Canadia & Guests
