NZ Music Month - Highlights Posted: Fri Apr 25, 2008 3:09 pm Thursday May 1 - Roaming launch gigs in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland - VIP launch event in Auckland Friday May 2 - Industry party, showcasing ten of NZ's best acts Friday May 9 - NZ Symphony Orchestra's 'Made In NZ' concert performing new contemporary works. Monday May 12 - C4 premieres 'Rocked The Nation', a show featuring 100 NZ music milestones. Tuesday May 13 - The annual Parliamentary NZ Music Quiz issued by Minister Tizard in the House. Thursday May 15 - 'Voices of the Land: Nga Reo o te Whenua' at the ERUPT Lake Taupo Festival with NZ's living authority on nga puoro, Richard Nunns. Friday May 16 - The Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra's 'Discover NZ Music 2008 Concert for Schools', performing the works of famous NZ composers. Monday May 19 Onwards - 95bFM's NZ Music Week - featuring 100% local tunes and the 'Fancy New Band' showcase over two nights at the Kings Arms in Auckland. Friday May 23 - ChartFest Christchurch Music Expo celebrating Canterbury's finest. Saturday May 24 - Play It Strange 'Band of Strangers' concert (part of World Vision's 40 Hour Live) - students becoming members of The Black Seeds and Elemeno P. Friday May 30 - MTV Kickstart finals take place, wrapping up a month-long search to find the best up-and-coming artist in the country. Saturday May 31 - Pacific Music Awards honour the achievements of NZ's many great Polynesian musicians. - OpShop play the official closing of NZ Music Month in a regional NZ town. Where? The winner of a competition to host NZ's Music Month's closing show on their doorstep (more likely, in their rugby club, school hall or pub). And All Month Long: - Live performances at SkyCity by Bic Runga, Hollie Smith, Donald Reid, Dragon, Sarah Brown, Nathan Haines, Nesian Mystik, Lewis McCallum, Katchafire and Che Fu and The Krates. - ZM are broadcasting a heap of bands from their 'Live Lounge' again this year at York Street Studios. - Gray Bartlett 50th Anniversary Tour celebrating Bartlett's career and the platinum selling NZ artists he's worked with, as well as the commemorative double CD compilation coming out on EMI. - Classic Hits are testing listeners' NZ music knowledge throughout the month and are giving away prizes. - At least one NZ artist plays live each day from the Kiwi FM studio. - Live music happening in Public Libraries all around the country during May. - NZ Music documentaries screen throughout the month on the Documentary Channel (Sky). - NZ Music Commission Musicians Mentoring in Schools Programme has more than 100 school visits booked with a pool of musicians including Lani, David and Justyn (Elemeno P), Laughton (Kora), Charlotte Yates, Bobby Kennedy (OpShop), Rob Pome'e (Three Houses Down), Tama Waipara and Wayne Mason. - The NZ Music Commission will also be helping teachers and students with the resource 'Ways to Celebrate NZ Music in Schools' during NZ Music Month 2008. |
