Steve Abel & The Chrysalids Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 4:52 pm Steve Abel & The Chrysalids - 'Flax Happy' Album Release Celebration Auckland Central, 22 May 2008 When: Thursday, 22 May 2008 Time: Doors: 8:00pm Steve Abel & The Chrysalids on stage 9.30pm Voom – play following Where: The Dogs Bollix: 2 Newton Rd, Newton Pre Sales www.cheeseontoast.co.nz: $15.00 Doors 8pm Steve Abel & The Chrysalids onstage 9.30pm After- party hosted by Voom! Last chance to see them for a while as everyone heads off in different directions to continue their other projects! Local folk/rock hero Steve Abel and his collective The Chrysalids are excited to announce the release of their impassioned sophomore album 'Flax Happy' due for release on May 19. Described as a 'kiwi supergroup', Steve Abel's band The Chrysalids brings together some of New Zealand's most renowned and talented musicians featuring Geoff Maddock (Bressa Creeting Cake, Goldenhorse) on electric guitar, Mike Hall (Brunettes, Dimmer, Pluto) on double bass, Milan Borich (Pluto, Bic Runga band) on drums, and Gareth Thomas (Goodshirt) with the accordion. Unfortunately Gareth is in the UK and can't make the release show but has left his sweet sounds all over the album! Abound in the richly poetic lyrics of Abel, 'Flax Happy' continues with the rolling rhythms and elegiac ballads for which Steve Abel has become known, and features Texan luminary Jolie Holland, who lends her distinctive jazz-and-blues inflected croon to Abel's own unique husky vocals on the mournful duets 'Cinders of the Sun' and 'Heart of Misery (The Bough)'. With such sweet ballads presented alongside others the impressive alt/folk/rock pedigree of 'Little Death', it would seem Abel has added another inspired offering to his increasingly remarkable catalogue |
