NZ Red Cross to hold concert for Afghanstan
Posted: Sun Jul 6, 2008 10:16 am
''Afghanistan is still at war. Every day, men, women and children get killed, maimed or displaced. Millions live in fear for their lives and for the future of their children," said International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) President Jacob Kellenberger.

As New Zealand Red Cross aid workers work tirelessly on the ground in Afghanistan, a small group of local and Wellington musicians will come together to help make a difference.

On July 19, Bar Mode in Palmerston North will host a benefit concert supporting the ICRC’s humanitarian projects in Afghanistan. The music event will bring together sounds from Sam Manzanza, the Rhythm African Band, Thieves of Time and Bohemian.Thought and all money raised from ticket sales for the event will be donated to the ICRC for their operations in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is one of the ICRC's largest operations worldwide, carrying out programmes that include visiting detainees, restoring links between dispersed families, as well as health and rehabilitation projects.

New Zealand Red Cross is playing its part in the ICRC’s operations in Afghanistan. Currently there are four New Zealand Red Cross aid workers deployed in the country while a further two have recently completed missions there.

New Zealand Red Cross has also committed funding to educating Afghanistan communities on the dangers of landmines and on community first aid training for war injuries and health clinics.

Midwife and New Zealand Red Cross aid worker Chris Hughes has recently returned home following a three month deployment at Mirwais Hospital, Afghanistan.

“Life is hard in Afghanistan, poverty and disease is rife, it is freezing cold in winter and there are no heating systems and people’s expectations are different.”

“Despite this the people of Afghanistan are very generous and when they open their heart to you they will share everything even if they have nothing. They would share their last crust with us,” said Chris.

The need for assistance in Afghanistan is enormous but the volatile security situation has often disrupted humanitarian work and deprived those in need of vital aid.

Tickets for the concert cost $10 and are available from New Zealand Red Cross, Bar Mode, and Mango Music.

Thanks to Bar Mode, The Edge, Mango Music and K&M Print for supporting this event.
