Nelson Arts Festival 2008 Posted: Thu Aug 14, 2008 9:05 am Nelson Arts Festival 16 –27 October 2008 www.nelsonartsfestival.co.nz In Nelson we welcome the spring with an explosion of creativity. For 13 years the Nelson Arts Festival has offered Nelsonians and visitors twelve days of top national and international theatre, dance, cabaret, music and talks. This year’s festival opens on October 16 and includes: The Mamaku Project (New Zealand) French-Kiwi co-founders Tui Mamaki and Monsieur Escargot gather around them a selection of talent to perform, record, and forge the vessel – a musical project linking peoples, landscapes and languages. The core duo Tui Mamaki and Monsieur Escargot performed together for the first time at Errobiko Festibala in Pays Basque, France in 2004, and had the crowd climbing trees for a view at WOMAD this year. A humming collective of five New Zealand artists join them for live performances in Nelson. Their show is costumed and beautiful. With recent acclaimed performances at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, AK07 and the Big Day Out, The Mamaku Project spreads festive warmth wherever they go. ‘Sprouting their own version of New Zealand song, taking in Pacifica, dub/ reggae and jazz styles with a distinctly cinematic weave. A new national treasure.’ - Simon Sweetman, North and South www.mamakuproject.com Venue: Founders' Mainstage, Founders Heritage Park, 87 Atawhai Drive Dates: Founders: Sat 18 Oct 8:30pm Neudorf: Sun 19 Oct 3pm Cost: Early bird $33, full $38. Performers Neil, Joe, Chris and Dizzy Dog entertain while incorporating important messages such as being active and using manners. With a wonderful mix of dance, song and humour the children are sure to be active participants in the performance. ‘The Funky Monkeys are by far New Zealand’s best children’s entertainers. Not only do the kids of the nation rock out to their funky beats but I’ve also found myself singing and dancing along.’ Stu ‘the night guy’ ZMFM Venue: Founders' Mainstage, Founders Heritage Park, 87 Atawhai Drive Dates: Fri 24 Oct 11am, Sat 25 Oct 11am & 2pm Cost: under 18 $12, early bird $15, full $18 Ages: 2-7 years Tickets: Everyman Records The Lonesome Buckwhips Charity Gala (New Zealand) Arthur Meek - Arty Buckwhip Ben Hutchison - Benny Buckwhip Gareth Williams - Gary Buckwhip Miriama Ketu - Miri Buckwhip, their non-biological sister If you enjoyed The Kransky Sisters you’ll love a night out with the Buckwhip family. Onstage feuding, political satire and family fun rolled into the catchiest tunes this side of Te Wai Pounamu. Winners of the 2007 Best Comedy Award at the Wellington Fringe Festival. ‘At last - a group that has proven Kiwi Country music can be sung in a Kiwi voice.’ - John Smythe, Theatreview Venue: Founders' Mainstage, Founders Heritage Park, 87 Atawhai Drive Dates: Sun 19 Oct 7pm Cost: early bird $20, full $25 Tickets: Everyman Records |
