Gypsy Fever 2 Posted: Sat Sep 6, 2008 10:40 am Gypsy Fever heads to the capital for what promises to be a raucous gig at the one and only Mighty Mighty on Saturday 13th September featuring Wellington's own Neko Ne Zna and DJs Balkanetic and Rasa. Prizes for best dressed Gypsies. Niko Ne Zna perform the music of the Balkans and Eastern Europe. They specialize in the music made famous by Emir Kustarica films Black Cat White Cat, Underground, Borat, and The Time of the Gypsies. It is high energy music with dark undertones and sexy gypsy style. The band’s line up consists of talent from tutors and graduates of the New Zealand School of Music, members of the Battle-Ska Galactica, the Zirkus Big Band, the Porirua Trust City Brass Band, and Village of the Idiots, the result being a world class act with exotic tunes, fantastic grooves and exciting solos. With Trumpet, Saxophone, Trombone, Sousaphone, Drums and Percussion Niko Ne Zna are a truly authentic sounding and looking ensemble. They can roam while playing, and enchant the audience into dancing, clapping and stomping all night long. Niko Ne Zna have played at various venues and events around Wellington including the Fringe Festival at the Paramount Theatre, Te Papa Marae, the Matterhorn, Hummingbird , the Wellington International Jazz Festival, botanical gardens Summer City Wellington festival, various community events including culture kicks, Perilous circus festival, and feature regularly at the Southern Cross tavern. DJ Balkanetic has been entertaining audiences at festivals, parties and weddings around New Zealand for the last couple of years with a highly infectious, uplifting blend of Balkan beats, Klezmer, Romani/Gypsy music and organic global grooves. He has played at Prana, Splore, Jambalaya, the Big Bay Out, Cross St Carnival, Culturefest, AK07, The Famous Spiegeltent and 2 Womad afterparties alongside Mr Scruff and Nickodemus. He has also supported The Hot Grits, The Mamaku Project, The Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band and the Jews Brothers. Last summer he undertook a 20 date national tour with the Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band and recently he completed a 15 date winter tour with the Hot Grits. Balkanetic hosts a weekly global music show called Terra Beats on KFM, organises the highly successful Gypsy Fever parties and is the founder of independent record label Monkey Records. Hailing from Auckland city, DJ Rasa weaves an intoxicating cocktail of Middle Eastern/Indian traditional and contemporary grooves, fusing an exotic blend ranging from upbeat/break beat eastern flavours to downbeat lounge styles. DJ and instrumentalist Rasa also played sitar/darbouka in world fusion band ISHTA and more recently Middle eastern inspired pstchedelic soundscape artists, An Emerald City. As a part of the Terra Beats Sound System DJ Rasa has been playing parties and clubs in the Auckland area including gigs with Mamaku Project and DJ Balkanetic.
