Get a Sweet Tooth for them…The Electric Confectionaires Posted: Tue Nov 4, 2008 6:42 am *I saw them around about this time last year... Just sayin'. There was no better way this Saturday to celebrate such a beautiful sunny afternoon than going along to the Electric Confectionaires show at the Masonic Tavern in Davenport. Arriving at 2 to an already packed room upstairs full of friendly locals, it seemed they all had the same idea. Looking around the venue, it was great to see various age groups showing their support, along with Coshercot Honeys’ Jordan Morris and Sasha Frantz. Also out for the arvo gig were Ben Tindall and Liam Dargaville from yet another Auckland group, Ms Manikin. Young talent, The Earlybirds were the first act who were most impressive with front-man Filip Kostovich’s erratic singing and foot-tapping dance style. They’ve already released a debut single called Seventeen and to be honest, it wouldn’t surprise me if after a few more shows next year they turn up at BDO 09! Finishing with awesome drum beats thanks to Sean Patterson, and tambourine action, the lads joined the rest of us for White Birds & Lemons. By this point, there were no seats with a view left, so most made ourselves at home on the floor like good school kids with crossed legs. It truly was one of the cutest things you’ve ever seen…Even cuter than that fluffy bunny rabbit your nana knitted for you when you were little…whatever that looks like?! Looking oh so rock n’ roll with their bare feet and pants turned up round their ankles, The White Birds strolled on stage to introduce themselves before busting into their beautiful music. Starry Eyes, which features on their mini-album, Who Says You’re Free?, was performed in such a way it felt like we had been teleported to that downtown bar at 2 in the morning that everyone describes when they hear the Birds live. The song to bring us back was probly the most popular song of the show, Secret Drug which is one of the more up-beat numbers on the album. I must say up until singer Scott Frantz replaced an enthusiastic ‘Wahoo!’ with a subtle ‘wha-yeah mother f*@ker!’ I thought these boys were reasonably innocent. Can I just say, I was pleasantly surprised! And because the sound was so clear, I’m sure even the old folks could have picked that one up! If you can catch them live at BDO next year, go for it before they get big and leave our shores in search of the international stardom that so many NZ bands aspire. The Electric Confectionaires were quick to get their show started, so White Birds Scott Frantz and lead guitarist, Matt Wilson popped themselves down on the floor with some fish n’ chips ready for some thigh slapping action. This really was one of the most relaxed gigs I’ve ever been to…it almost felt like we were at a friends place sitting round watching the T.V. I didn’t expect it, but it was awesome! From the minute the guys started, it sounded like they have been performing the same songs for years and years. All the favourites off their debut album, Sweet Tooth were performed including Bucktooth Bill, Mr Whippy, All my Love and Mind full of Method. Watching Rob Fenton beating the crap out of the drums, and then bursting into song is made to look ridiculously easy, while bassist Hamish Bode pulls sweet faces ooohing and ahhhhing. With all this going on, it’s hard to imagine that under a year ago these guys didn’t even have an album out. Now they’re playing at two venues for New Years (I’m not kidding guys!) and along with a string of other acts, every NZ musicians dream, BDO 08. They come across as down-to-earth musicians who will never let their fame get in the way of enjoying themselves. Lead singer Jaisi Sheehan proved this so well ending with their latest release, Piece of my Heart with confectious Stevey Wonder smile that was so goofy you couldn’t help but laugh. What better way to celebrate such a beautiful sunny afternoon than going along to a unique show like this in Davenport? There is no other way…so next time, be there…you’ll love it!
