Folk trio Forbidden Joe are packing their bags with their unique collection of sea shanties, celtic reels and gypsy songs and taking them on the road for their Summer 09 tour, in a Spaceship.

The tour follows the successful release of their debut EP Oh what a queer sensation in November last year. Featuring an eclectic repertoire of traditional and original folk songs, the band was delighted with the reception it received from music reviewers. "Inventive arrangements of old folk songs... evocative, fresh, and a bit theatrical... it's five tracks just whet the appetite for a larger serving," said Nick Bollinger on Radio New Zealand's The Sampler.

The band are playing at nine venues, throughout the country, over two and a half weeks. Concerts will feature their signature intimate, cabaret-style performances. "Every show is personal because we are always aspiring to relate the music to the audience. Unlike traditional folk interpretations, our arrangements and style deliver a whole new flavour," explains lead vocalist and concertina-player Frances Dickinson.

"On this tour we're really looking forward to introducing our music to new audiences... and hopefully reinventing some of their perceptions about what folk music is," she says.

A far-cry from stereotypical 'folkies' with beards and sandals, Forbidden Joe comprises three young performers with diverse musical backgrounds. They cast a wide net in their influences - spicing up the sound of folk with elements of jazz, Celtic, soul and European music. The unusual composition of instruments - cello (Emily Giles), banjo/trombone (Alex Borwick) and vocals/concertina (Frances Dickinson), adds to the band's distinctiveness.

"Because our sound is unconventional, it makes our music more appealing to a range of alternative music listeners. We are often surprised by those who come along and really engage with the music, especially when they are not necessarily folk aficionados." says Dickinson.

The band's repertoire is a combination of original songs and tunes, music that has been collected from the folk community, and recordings that have inspired them to create new arrangements.

Forbidden Joe formed in December 2007 and have played regularly at venues and festivals since. They plan to take their sound to Australia in 2009.
