BrazilBeat Sound System Posted: Tue May 19, 2009 3:36 pm BBSS hitting the main centres in the next couple weeks. Then down South... Mardi-gras styles! Fri 29 May Auckland Live Bar (w/The Retainers & Dub Asylum) 68 Hobson St Sat 6 June Wellington San Francisco Bathhouse (Mardi-Gras fancy dress) advance tix just $10 http://www.eventfinder.co.nz/2009/jun/wellington/brazilbeat-sound-system-sfbh This year's 10th Annual Cuba Street Carnival in Wellington brought the capitol to its feet (dancing of course). With stages dotting the cultural centre, live bands, DJs and performers pumped all day and into the night. At midnight, after the Illuminated Parade had snaked its way through the streets and batucada groups under the regency of samba master Carlos Ferreira had battled it out, the masses were at the Havana Club stage in Courtenay Place to watch BrazilBeat Sound System. Percussionist/MC Nego Beto worked the crowd into a frenzy with his polyrhythmic handiwork and on the mic. DJ Mara kept the beats coming in an anthemic blast of Brazilian baile-funk basslines, distorted electro stabs and samba breaks. The throng responded with hands in the air as far as the eye could see. BrazilBeat have not played in Wellington since that night. But Saturday 6th of June, The San Francisco Bath House will resonate with the sweet sound of conga skins tightened to perfection, the rat-a-tat of the repinique and deep bass that hits home in the pit of the stomach. Mardi-gras masquerade is the way to go, and prizes will be handed out to those sporting the hottest fancy-dress! Special guests TBC. Fri 26 June Queenstown Revolver Sat 27 June Wanka Red Rock Tue 30 June Queenstown Winterfestival Mardi-gras main stage 5:30pm, then the after-party at Revolver Winter in Rio de Janeiro means temperatures of around 20 degrees. And people there complain of the cold! Brazilian percussionist / MC Nego Beto finds it pretty hard to brave the frigid air of Queenstown in June. But the heat of the people, he says, makes up for it. BrazilBeat Sound System hit Queenstown and Wanaka just in time for the American Express Winter Festival. Catch them at Revolver Friday 26th, in Wanaka at Red Rock Sat 27th. Then on Tuesday 30th on the Mardi-Gras main stage 5:30pm and the after-party of course, at Revolver. Heavily spiked with guaraná, BrazilBeat Sound System is a high-octane rush from head to toe. The electronic band originated in San Francisco, California, and have been uplifting crowds across New Zealand since 2001. Their genre-bending mashup of roots, baile-funk, break beats, dub is pumped up by tight percussive arrangements. BBSS released their debut album “Nova” in November 2007 on their own label Belezza. |
