Mills Reef Creative Culture Festival is a community arts and music inspired festival. Mills Reef Creative Culture Festivals’ will strengthen community awareness of local arts, fashion and NZ blues music by providing a family orientated day of entertainment in a relaxed and socially responsible environment.

This Family orientated Festival is set to become an iconic annual event that will cohesively draw together New Zealand’s Blues Community, Contemporary Local Artists and Families alike. The Festival will give the wider public the opportunity to experience all the vibrancy of these eclectic creative artists in one afternoon at Taurangas’ most popular destination venue – Mills Reef Winery.

Event Overview

On the first of November 2009 Mills Reef will graciously open its majestic gates to the public and play host to the greatest cultural phenomena Tauranga has had to offer in living memory. The attendees will be treated to the finest Arts, Music, Fashion, Food and Wine that Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Auckland have to offer.

Ticket holders will be treated to performances of 6 top quality nationally acclaimed blues bands; the amazing works of 20 local Artists, 8 contemporary sculptors; the latest apparel by 10 Tauranga Designers and be waited on hand and foot by 52 trained catering and bar Staff.

The audience will be indulged by the sounds of Midge Marsden and Sting Ray with Glen Campbell plus an additional 4 other nationally acclaimed authentic blues acts still to be announced. They will get to experience 40 remarkable pieces of artwork by locally renowned artists, as well as view 16 marvelous sculptures presented by local carvers and sculptors. The exciting and eclectic talents of Taurangas top fashion designers will also be on display. Furthermore, Mills Reef will also be hosting delectable wine tasting in their elaborate tasting room and entertaining attendees with a culinary experience second to none.

Mills Reef Creative Culture Festival will be hosting 6 of New Zealands’ most Authentic and most widely acclaimed Blues Bands. This lineup has been confirmed as the Top New Zealand Blues Lineup for some years and will have audiences captivated from 11am until 8pm.

Midge Marsden's career is unparalleled in New Zealand. His professional career spans almost 50 years. He has played thousands of concerts to tens of thousands of fans and has performed with a list of artists that reads like a definitive whose who of NZ music luminaries.

Named NZ entertainer of the year in 1990, his many recordings include the critically acclaimed 'Burning Rain', which achieved gold status. More recently he has released albums with The Rodger Fox Big Band, Bullfrog Rata, NZ Harmonica sessions and his latest semi acoustic album TRAVEL 'N TIME.

Midge has been fortunate to have toured internationally and has toured the USA four times focusing mainly on the southern states Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

It was during one of these tours that Midge studied at the university of Mississippi where he graduated with a diploma in southern studies.

Midge has played such famous venues as Ronnie Scott's in London, Tipitinas in New Orleans, Antones in Austin and Beale St in Memphis.

Midge recently was awarded the honour of New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to New Zealand music. Shortly after he was also awarded an honorary Bachelor of Arts from the Waikato Polytechnic.

Midge remains New Zealand's pre-eminent rhythm and blues artist. His combination of excellent musicians and unstoppable energy combine to guarantee a great show every time.

The official story has the band springing from a performance at the New Zealand National Jazz Festival in 1991, when Derek Jacombs (front man and guitarist) was invited to play a solo set of blues with seminal NZ harp wizard, Grant Bullot.

In 1992 Kokomo made there first album, The Old Original Kokomo Blues, which had traditional blues enthusiasts enthralled with its no bones production and authentic musical replications. In 1994 Kokomo returned to the studio to record their second acclaimed album When In Rome Do Rome. This sparked a working relation with studio technician, Nigel Masters, a bond that is still strong today. Later that year Tracie De Jong approached Kokomo about writing a collaboration album and Kokomo got to make their "pop" album, Stromboling, with her.

To Be Or What (1996) was a return to blues. This was an album that showcased the bands true song writing skills. Roger retired from the band at the end of 1998, so he could spend more time with his growing family and as a mark of respect for seven years together Kokomo Blues became simply Kokomo.

2001 marked their illustrious10th anniversary, which they celebrated by the release of a limited edition CD.

Since then the band have been consistently working towards bigger and brighter aspirations. They have extensively toured; played the Whangarei Jazz and Blues festivals multiple times; the Matakana Music Mountain Festival, The Bay of Islands Jazz and Blues Festival, the Little Weed Festival , The Coromandel Blues and Roots Festival as well as playing the Tauranga Jazz Festival on several occasions.

Darcy Perry

Darcy Perry is an entertainer with a deep understanding of the blues. He’s played with some of the world’s best and it shows, both in his rich guitar tone and electrifying stage presence.

Given a trumpet at age 7, Darcy began his music career in brass bands. In his teens he picked up bass guitar to play gigs with his brothers and local musicians. At 18, Te Kuiti High School friend, Stephen Chadwick, gifted him a Huang Star Performer. Sonny Terry was an early influence and Darcy says he's been playing those same few licks for the past two decades!
With encouragement from Bullfrog Rata, he moved from playing bass to slide guitar and later electric guitar. Perry worked alongside blues icons Bullfrog Rata, Midge Marsden and Shayn Wills, before fronting his own band in pubs and clubs around the country. Now established on the NZ festival circuit, the band is touring internationally.

STINGRAY
Slide and Harp Masters

STINGRAY provide a powerful delivery of jump blues, driven with harmonica & the lap slide of Glenn Campbell. When STINGRAY hit the stage & start playing you will soon understand the power of the blues. The show has an energy that is well worth the effort & coming along to see them live.

Glenn Campbell is a prodigy steel guitarist. Glenn has had a very colourful career with playing with THE MISUNDERSTOOD in the 60's in California. The band moved to London in 1966. In the UK they recruited Englishman Tony Hill on guitar, thus forming an international rock group, preceding Hendrix.

Influenced by the yard birds, the distinctive feature of their sound was Campbell's steel guitar. Rolling Stone Magazine (Issue 956) in a September 2, 2004 review describes the MISUNDERSTOOD'S Campbell as "Jeff Beck & Jimmy Page rolled into one"
Post Misunderstood

After the band split, Campbell was the only original member including former Bush front man, Steve Hoard on lead vocals. They opted for a pop & blues genre.

British backing musicians were hired and the name was changed to JUICY LUCY, who made the charts in UK with a standard rendition of Who Do You Love? and released two successful albums.

After the break up of JUICY LUCY Glenn was hired to play for Joe Cocker with whom he toured the US. He also played with Sammy Hagar, and with Steve Hoard, and also Rod Piazza's Dirty Blues Band.

The Johnny Stash Band play Rock’n’Roll played like it used to be. They play with hot guitar, smokin’ drums and authentic upright double bass.

“The Johnny Stash Band” offer a swinging time with their own tunes plus songs from Muddy Waters, Louis Jordan, Hank Williams, The Stray Cats and Chuck Berry. Formed in 2006, the dynamically energetic trio consists of double bassist Simon Crowfoot from UK band Torment, American Eric Otoka on drums and Dunedin’s John Maydon on guitar/ harmonica.

The Stash have been playing regular gigs around the Waikato and Bay of Plenty including Hamilton’s Diggers as well as local Blues Society Events including Big Joe Louis and the recent Rotorua Blues Festival at rave. In 2009 they were very special guests at the Hamilton Gardens festival. Already this year they have had guest showcasing performances at the 2009 Beach Hop and Tauranga Jazz and Blues Festival.

The Gunsmiths

The Gunsmiths have finally returned from hiatus. A long wait for many quintessential 80’s blues rock fans. The Gunsmiths were one of the great founders of New Zealand blues-rock and were apart of the movement that was spurred by the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn.

The Gunsmiths treat the audience to brilliantly sharp renditions of SRV, Cream and Hendrix covers, while spicing their set up with a variety of “Super Group-esque” original songs as well.

The Gunsmiths consist of some extremely talented musicians. Rodger Fox is New Zealand's top Jazz Trombonist. Through his work as the leader of the Rodger Fox Big Band he has performed at the Montreaux, Monterey and Wichita Jazz Festivals in the USA along with 2 performances at the International Association of Jazz Educator Convention in Chicago and Los Angeles. Vinnie Buchanan is on drums and has played with Australasian cult classic bands such as Dragon and the Legionnaires. Paul Marionette has spent the last five years with the Darcy Perry band and Paul Smith, notably the father of New Zealands’ soul diva Hollie Smith, was hugely influential in the formation and development of the Dunedin Music scene. Smith formed Loadstone which was the precursor of the hugely successful mid seventies band Mother Goose.

Artist Announcement 1

Mills Reef Creative Culture Festival will be displaying the works of Taurangas’ finest and most well known talented local artist. The works of these incredible innovators will be show cased throughout the day and all works on presentation will be available to purchase. This will be one of the largest displays of local talent this year and this diverse presentation will be one of the most all encompassing exhibitions of Taurangas vastly dynamic Artist pool for quite some time. We have confirmed all the artist participating in the event and the following artists are part of our first announcement.

Dan Obrien

Dan Obrien is both a talented sculpture and painter. He is one of the few artists at the Festival that will have to exhibitions. started clay sculpture and painting once I had the time and opportunity following retirement.

Although basically self taught his family heritage is an artistic one. Appreciation of art was always encouraged though out his maturing art career. Despite his fabulous skills Dan never saw himself as an artist.

His style is realistic, amazingly without a formal training, Dan achieves a near photographic result.

Dan generally uses acrylic paints on board or canvas and pencil or pastels on paper. Dan skillfully crafts his sculptor from clay.

Catherine Morton

Cathrine is an artist who is drawn to capturing a snapshot of life. From a child playing in the water to the overhead boughs of a tree, Cathrine loves capturing the feeling of the moment. Her use of Acrylic in this realism style helps her develop the interplay of light and colour, which is an integral part of her work.

Cathrine was the 1st runner up in the Bay of Plenty Yellow Pages Art Awards this year. She was also selected for the 2009 Molley Morpeth Canaday Art Awards, along with the Tauranga Inaugural Art Awards held in November 2008. She has exhibited several times in the Bethlehem College Art Exhibition and at the Affordable Arts in Wellington.

Richard

Richard has been an active artist all his life. He has an in-depth formal training, with a Diploma in Visual Arts, a certificate in Decorative Arts and has worked as a technician at an arts school for a number of years.

Currently based in Tauranga, Richard has had a of solo exhibitions at the Creative Tauranga Gallery as well as exhibiting at the annual labour
Weekend Art Waikino event and is currently looking forward to participating in the Affordable Art show in Wellington in July and August 09.

His Influences are often unconscious, but love of the natural world, a fascination with the East Asian, particularly the Japanese aesthetic, and the freedom of birds and flight play a large part in his works. He has been quoted as saying “ I have this penchant for little details. Landscape, bird and marine life and aviation/automotive subject matter are what really inspire me subject wise”

Richard typically use oils on either canvas or board, preferring the time honoured medium for its richness of colour and slow drying attributes and occasionally combine this with other media such as gold leaf and enamel paint with board for more decorative pieces.

It is Richards’ intention to distil a moment and make each work a part of its own small world. If he can lure you into that world and let you fill in the rest with your imagination, then he feels he has achieved his goal.

Nancy Frazer

Nancy migrated to New Zealand in 1980 and is a full-time, self-taught artist. Five years ago she rekindled her passion for art and began experimenting with techniques and styles previously untried by other artists.

She now specializes in contemporary art with the use of acrylics on canvas, and a strong emphasis on textures and vibrant colours.
She has successfully exhibited her paintings in various joint exhibitions throughout New Zealand, including the “Mazda Artworks Exhibition” held at the Hilton Hotel in Auckland as well as “Affordable Art” (Wellington), “Original Art” (Auckland), The Royal Easter Show” (Auckland), Bethlehem College and Independent Artists exhibition in Tauranga.

Currently her works can be seen on permanent display at the Urban Café, Décor Green World Café and Turners Gallery at Te Puna. They can also be viewed on “The Living Channel” Art Gallery.

Nancy is a member of The Tauranga Society of Artists, The NZ Art Guild and “Creative Tauranga”.

In 2008 Nancy was one of eight artists selected by the NZ Art Guild to display a painting in London in aid of the NZ Shore Plover. “Suze” in Mayfair agreed to exhibit the works in its gallery during September and October. An auction was then held at the residence of the NZ High Commissioner.

Nancy was invited by Avinki Ltd to exhibit her artworks at the New Zealand Avant-Garde Showcase held in Hong Kong in February & March 2009.

Margaret Fairs

Margaret Fairs has been painting for many years, mostly self-taught. She uses watercolours and oils with great gusto to capture the pure colours and free life of New Zealand. The Bay of Plenty provides inspiration for an eclectic collection of subjects with increasing popularity. Margaret is a woman of few words, but feels it is best to let the vibrant detail of her work speak for itself.

Bette Hainge

Bette has been painting for over twenty-five years and have been exhibiting for the Majority of this Time. She has been a three-time entrant in the Tauranga Art and Garden Festival.

Bette Hainge find influence from her surroundings, absorbing the feature, form and colour combinations that surround her in ever day life. Once she begins creating her ideas flow freely.

Bette makes grand use of oils and acrylics. Bette finds it hard to pigeonhole her style but states that “ I endeavour to transmit my feelings for the subject to the viewer and make my love of colour evident in my paintings”.

Alec Roy

Alec has been potting for 25 years and was a night school tutor for more than 10 of these. He enjoys what he does and if others enjoy his work that is an added bonus to him.

He has explored many finishes over the years and is currently working with semi precious metal salts to produce inglaze luster’s. The pieces are fired multiple times in the kiln and the final firing can produce amazing finishes.

Ian Boyle

Ian went self employed and set up his own business, Stonescapes in 1994. This was a busy period using his dry stone walling skills on a wide variety of projects and he was very focused on furthering his craft and developing his business. He was involved in some very large restoration projects and typical clients would be City Councils, Nature Conservation Bodies, farmers and private landowners.

From the year 2000 to the present day he has changes emphasis and direction of his work, spending more time on creative projects and creating sculptural form.

Ian has had an illustrious career and has had various demonstrations of his craft at the Sheffield Show in South Yorkshire. He has also been showcased at a number of profiled events including; Sheffield Botanic Garden Open Day, Fuelling a Revolution Exhibition, Sheffield Millennium Gallery,
UK Arts council funded Tobhta Shelter project Glen Howe Park, Sheffield,
Start of the “Sun Pillar” project in Texas, USA, and locally exhibited
“Beauty and Decay 1” at BOP Garden and Art Fest 06.

His skills have also earned him a Creative Communities NZ grant for
“The Stan” shelter for BOP Polytechnic 25th Year celebrations.

Ian is a truly remarkable artist of both distinction and bold creativity.

Each labels’ display will be hosted by a profiled designer and they are able to talk fashion freely with the public. Only at Creative Cultures Festival can you see art, listen to music, enjoy quality wine and food while listening to the best blues this country has to offer. All ten of our contemporary designers have been confirmed; the two following designers are part of our first announcement.

Oyl

Oyl was launched in 2006 to create clothing that is timeless with a ‘wow!’ factor. Behind the label are the creative and free spirited Nicola Screen and the gentle, outdoor loving Epicurean Vicki Reid. Bound by an obsession with fashion, the pair collaborates to create beautiful clothes without compromise; a gorgeous fusion of original New Zealand artwork and screen-printed designs beaded and embroidered onto hand treated and dyed fabrics.

For their S/S 09/10 collection, Portraits of Ophelia, Reid and Screen were, like generations of artists before them, inspired by Shakespeare’s character Ophelia.

“Ophelia was a popular, iconic subject for painters,” says Screen. “The tragedy of her death spawned countless images of beautiful, heart broken young women, adorned with wild flowers or floating in a river amongst the billowing fabric of their gowns,” she says. “As a muse, she was practically irresistible to the emotive pre-Raphaelite artists, and their renditions of her fit so well with the focused aesthetic of this collection.”
