New Venue/Gallery/Zine/CD shop in Auckland Posted: Mon Jul 27, 2009 4:58 pm The High Seas is a space in Auckland, NZ which is comprised of a gallery / bookshop / record store and music venue for musicians, sound artists and film makers to perform their work While they are open to a broad range of contemporary art, their focus is in showcasing local comic, illustration and design artists producing material that is outside the mainstream forms of these practices. Providing a bookshop furthers this focus by stocking a selection of comics, graphic novels, art books and zines from local and international artists. Their bookshop also welcomes contributions. Alongside the visual art, they stock a wide range of innovative and experimental audio, mostly from New Zealand practitioners. They work closely with the Audio Foundation and stock a range of music that until now has rarely been available in stores. Website: http://www.thehighseas.co.nz Location: 1/12-14 Beresford Square, Auckland - (just off Pitt St, and opposite the supper club) Opening weekend extravaganza! The High Seas presents: Our Love Will Destroy The World (ex Birchville Cat Motel) Rosy Parlane Nigel Wright 8.30 PM - Saturday the 8th August Artist Info Our Love Will Destroy The World Just excoriating blood-drones and blitzkrieg ragas from Nowhere, New Zealand, in search of fleeting moments of infinite density; where everything is louder than everything else, time slows to a crawl, and brains under stress slip into warm, prickly comas. Think Coltrane, Think Public Image, Think Conrad, Cale, or MacLise. Think Prandit Pran Nath being chewed up by Hanatarashs tropical piranha collection. Since the beginning of 2008, Our Love Will Destroy The World has just released a couple of 7" vinyl records, and a couple of LPs on some nice international labels, but so what. Rosy Parlane Rosy Parlane is a musician from New Zealand who began playing music with the avant-garde rock trio Thela. Thela released two cds, 'Eponymous' and 'Argentina' on the label Ecstatic Peace! He subsequently began working with abstract electronic based music, both as a solo artist and as Parmentier with fellow Thela collaborator, Dion Workman. His full and intricate soundscapes are comprised of of sample-loops, pianos, guitars, and field recordings manipulated via digital means. Parlane has released two solo albums on Sigma Editions, and a collaboration with Christian Fennesz on the Australian label, Synaesthesia ['Live', SYN001] He currently lives in Auckland with his family. Nigel Wright Nigel Wright creates slabs of heavy drones, underlying rhythms trying to get out and sometimes succeeding, speakers sometimes complaining.... NW uses his laptop and guitar to aid him in creating these pieces with no particular beginning or ending points, more a filtering of a sound that already exists. NW collaborates with Andrew Scott (half of Metal Rouge) as Nest, and with local artist Tim Coster as Cathedrals as well as helping to run The High Seas gallery/shop/venue with Auckland visual artist Sophie Watson. New Nest double Lathe LP out now! (contact: [email protected] for copies) |
