AROHA Festival presents
Wānanga / Workshops

Date: Sunday 14 March, 1pm and 3pm
Venue: Mika Studios, 111B May Road, Mt Roskill, Auckland

Taonga Pūoro with Mahina Kaui, 1pm
Taonga Pūoro are traditional Māori musical instruments. Mahina Kaui is an accomplished player of Taonga Pūoro, and has been teaching people about these ancient treasures, both nationally and internationally, for the past fifteen years. In this workshop you will learn the whakapapa (genealogy) and stories of Taonga Pūoro, how they are played and what they are used for – including healing – and discover how the Kōauau can blend with the music of today.

Body Percussion with Alfira, 3pm
Alfira teaches Ratoh Duek (sitting dance), a form of body percussion that stems from Aceh in North Sumatra. Ratoh Duek involves making rhythmical sounds through clapping, clicking and slapping the chest and legs, and is accompanied by traditional Islamic devotional song. By performing and participating in this music, the individual feels that they are part of a group and a sense of community is created. Alfira taught Ratoh Duek to the victims of the South-East Asian Tsunami as part of their trauma relief.
