UCSA – Jim Beam BATTLE OF THE BANDS 2005
Posted: Mon May 2, 2005 8:46 pm
Microphones will swing and drumsticks will fly as the University of Canterbury Student’s Association (UCSA) seeks to find the supreme student rock-band in Canterbury. The inaugural event is to take place on Fridays over May - NZ music month - at the UCSA bar, The Foundry.

Students from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch Polytechnic, Lincoln University and Christchurch College of Education are invited to enter the competition, which will not only give them the opportunity to showcase their talent but also take home a respectable prize package. Bands will also be given the chance to promote themselves through the various student magazines; something that Scott Willson of participating band Rhythm Subrosa believes “is an excellent opportunity to get our name out there. I only hope that we have had enough beer not to be nervous, but not too much beer or we may forget parts of our songs”

Entered bands must have at least one member attending any of the above tertiary institutions, and will perform for up to 30 minutes in front of the crowd and judges. At least one of the songs played must be an original by the band, and one must be a cover of a kiwi song. The remaining songs are up to their own discretion.

Critiqued on originality, crowd rapport and just having that special “x factor”, judges – who are familiar with the music industry and take a special interest in student music - will pick the top band at each heat. These bands will then compete for the title to be held on May 27th in the UCSA ballroom (beside The Foundry).

"It's encouraging to see such an overwhelming response from Christchurch's Campus bands who are entering BOB” organiser Paul Kean said “this competition promises to be a lot of fun and will definitely grow into a bigger beast - maybe even an inter campus battle next year"

George Hampton, president of the University of Canterbury Students’ Association believes that the “UCSA has long been a breeding ground for live music and new talent… we are delighted to be start this competition with the hope that it will become an annual event, and then a longstanding tradition of the Association.”

Heats for the UCSA’s Battle of the Bands are the first three Fridays of May, with the final on Friday 27th May. All performances take place in the UCSA building, 90 Ilam Rd, Ilam. The Battle of the Bands is free of charge for both the audience and the bands.
