2008 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards Review Posted: Sun Oct 12, 2008 11:52 am The Conchords Have Landed! Busting through the glitz and glam, rushing around late as per usual, I managed to get to the entrance of Vector Arena. A familiar sight, only 3 or so weeks ago I was here to see Alterbridge, POD and Disturbed supported by our own Kiwi band Redline. Getting ushered through the entrance and then seated for the awards, I had a quick look around at the people surrounding me, and some of the familiar faces that were hopeful on winning an award (Tiki Taane & Anika Moa to name a few). A few years back the musical comedy pair of Jemaine Clement, and Bret Mckenzie left NZ bound for the US in search of higher hopes, and at these music awards they truly shone, winning all three of their categories, best album, best group and breakthrough act , and also they won the award for international achievement with well known hip-hop star Savage. Flight of the Conchords were apparently tied up with something happening in the US so they couldn't be here, but had send a pre-recorded speeches through for the acceptance of there awards, which as everything they do, were rediculously funny mentioning things like "we are barely even a group". Other people who really shone at these music awards were Liam Finn, Opshop, Tiki Taane, and just as I had expected, best rock album was well deserved by NZ's favourite rock act, Shihad. Tiki Taane unsurprisingly took out the Aotearoa Roots Album award, having had huge recent success on radio with his single 'Always On My Mind'. Once again a fantastic awards evening, great to see some up and coming musicians like Liam Finn really coming into their own in the New Zealand music scene this year. - Carl |
