Rippon Festival Announces Line-up Posted: Sat Aug 8, 2009 10:24 am Lake Wanaka SouNZ Incorporated organisers have announced the line-up for next year's Rippon Festival, which features Fat Freddy's Drop, The Black Seeds, Little Bushman, Iva Lamkum, Pacific Heights, Minuit, Eru Dangerspiel, Electric Wire Hustle, The Mint Chicks, and Opensouls. The biennial event is scheduled for Waitangi Day, Saturday 6th February next year at Rippon Vineyard. Local Wanaka band The Slur-Tones also won a coveted slot at the 2010 event, after their success at the Smokefree Rockquest National Finals last year. The three nineteen-year-olds are now studying music in Wellington, and guitarist and vocalist Fabian Shaw reveals that the band can't wait to perform on the Rippon stage. Twelve years since the first event, Rippon Festival has been now recognised as the nation's longest-running festival of its kind, solely promoting the music of Kiwi artists. Festival director Lynne Christie praises the quality of the selected musicians, noting that "they all have the ability to challenge, excite and move the 5000-strong audience". When asked if much has changed since the late nineties, Ms Christie mentions that most demos in 1997 came in the form of old C60 cassette tapes, with the band name scrawled on in vivid marker. She adds that selectors now get to listen to superbly recorded material from the nation's musicians, with demos and press-kits arriving as DVDs, memory sticks, youtube clips, podcasts, emailed MP3s and myspace website links. Christie adds that it has been an eye-opener to learn how many Kiwi bands are performing and/or living overseas, "touring, recording and creating fantastic music the nation can be proud of". Lake Wanaka SouNZ Incorporated has donated over $31000 to groups within the local region. Past profits have benefited such organisations as Wanaka Wastebusters, Infinity Skate Park, Pembroke Park, Ruby Island, and local schools... Last year, Rippon 08 sold out three months in advance and organisers are also expecting tickets for the Rippon 2010 event to move quickly. Tickets go on sale on October 12th through Ticketek and Play It Again. The festival's website can be accessed for further information at http://www.ripponfestival.co.nz/ |

RE: Rippon Festival Announces Line-up Posted: Fri Oct 30, 2009 3:35 pm RIPPON FESTIVAL SOLD OUT In less than three weeks, all tickets for Lake Wanaka’s Rippon Festival have been sold. With no gate sales available, keen music lovers have been quick to secure their tickets to the popular musical event. The 5000-capacity Kiwi music festival, which features Fat Freddy’s Drop, Opensouls, The Black Seeds, The Mint Chicks, The Slur-Tones, Pacific Heights, Minuit, Eru Dangerspiel, Little Bushman, Electric Wire Hustle and Iva Lamkum, takes place at Rippon Vineyard on Waitangi Day next year. The speed of ticket sales was somewhat of a surprise to director Lynne Christie, who thought the ‘sludgey gloom of an economy’ might have put the brakes on selling rates. “It’s fantastic that this kind of event is still being supported by people who love music,” she said today from her home in Wanaka. Buyers as far away as Manchester, Holland, and Colorado have been quick to seize their tickets online, which is how 79% of transactions were made for the 2010 event. This will be the eighth festival Lake Wanaka SouNZ Incorporated has held, and for next year’s event, spokesperson Clare Scurr says festival-goers can look forward to a hangi onsite at the vineyard, along with lake swims, a water slide, and a variety of food, drink and craft stalls. Christie admits the main draw-cards are the line-up and phenomenal view, and encourages people who have purchased tickets to “hang onto them like gold”. Lake Wanaka SouNZ Incorporated, a not-for-profit society, is donating one dollar per ticket sold towards the tsunami relief effort in Samoa.
