PUBLIC MEETING, MONDAY AUGUST 17th, 7:30pm @THE CABANA Napier's celebrated entertainment venue The Cabana may be forced to close its doors following a downturn in audience numbers over the past few months. In an effort to stave off closure, the Cabana is holding a public meeting at the venue at 7:30pm on Monday August 17th and urges everyone who supports this iconic establishment to attend. The Cabana was re-opened last year as a non-profit, community-based initiative by a small team of volunteers who have donated thousands of hours of their time to keep the venue open. Since then, the Cabana has hosted many of New Zealand's top entertainment artists, as well as being used by the community for school projects, private functions, memorial services, and a performance space catering for education, employment and opportunity for musicians and performers of all ages. Despite its community focus and support from the Police, the Cabana was issued with extremely prohibitive licensing hours by the Liquor Licensing Authority following objections from two neighbours and Napier City Council itself. Previously, the building had been granted a very liberal 3am, seven-day-a-week licence to operate as a strip club and massage parlour. The new, restrictive hours have had a major impact and, combined with a wet and cold winter and a worsening economic climate, have dramatically reduced the Cabana's patronage. Says the Cabana team: "It's extremely disappointing that we have to think about closing but it's simple mathematics: we need more people through the doors. We'd also very much hoped for more support from the Council with our licensing application, as we're trying to provide a much-needed resource for Hawke's Bay and its many visitors. We're perplexed as to why the Council so readily supports applications that promote gambling and poker machines, but objects to a live entertainment venue that is there to support the performing arts community." http://www.cabana.net.nz/ |
