Christchurch's biggest party features one of the strongest line-ups ever, keeping with the tradition of presenting dynamic emerging acts as well as some of the South Island's most significant artists across five stages showcasing some beautifully diverse musical styles.
Flying Nun legends The Verlaines headline CHARTFEST 2010 and join a host of incredible South Island spawned talent including the future soulsters Electric Wire Hustle Soundsystem, MTV Kickstart winners Clap Clap Riot, indie darlings Die! Die! Die!, RDU98.5FM RoundUp winners Sleepy Age, Dictaphone Blues, The Eastern, Tom Cosm, Soulsystem and many more.
CHARTFEST starts at 1pm with the Ukulele Orchestra Competition for those budding uke fanatics and an attempt at NZ's largest combined ukulele orchestra playing The Exponents 'Why Does Love Do This To Me'. Music performance clinics with the city's leading tutors are followed by the Music Career and Industry Expo. Everything you ever needed to know about the Christchurch music scene will be on show. Festival organiser Jeff Fulton said the festival has grown in 2010 and gone up a level for 2010.
"It's a lunchtime kickoff again this year with an afternoon of band-related activities… performance clinics, discussion panels and the excitement which is the CHARTFEST industry expo. Our aim is to encourage, involve, entertain and inspire the next generation of not only musicians, but managers, producers, journalists, graphic designers and web developers... anyone with an interest in a career in wider music industry".
"For music fans there are plenty of incredible performances at an affordable price too" Fulton says, "the wealth of talent across the city has meant the addition of two new stages in 2010 - the City Roots Stage as well as the new Chill Stage as the CHARTDISC Volume 3 (downbeat chill) compilation is released on 1 May.
Another new innovation is the CHARTFEST Band Team Search competition in the lead up to the main event, which gives talented young creative's from around the city's high schools the chance to gain exposure and help kick start their careers in the music industry.

CHART - Christchurchmusic.org.nz is proud to announce the forthcoming release of CHARTDISC VOL 3 the Downbeat Chill Edition for NZ Music Month 2010.
With the generous support and assistance of Double Happy, Becks and Licence to Chill, CHART has produced a 12 track album of delicious, soulful electronica, from some of the freshest acts the garden city has to offer.
Within this 12 track sampler the listener will experience an eclectic mix of artists. From the sexy dubstep stylings of Truth, Ghost, Mr Squatch, Mmdelai, Switch, Sanchez and Nacoa, through to the stripped back indietronica of Anthesiac and back to the laid back hip hop infused sounds of Electric Wire Hustle and JDubs, with a slice of smooth funk and jazz influenced beats, courtesy of Carmel Courtney and Max Maxwell, NRT and Departure Lounge, to round it all off.
As summer turns to autumn, this timeless collection will take the listener on a seasonal journey through the winter months and back out the other side into summer 2011, as the tracks blend together a sense of warmth, juxtaposed with a feeling of cool summer streams. This album is a must for those looking forward to hitting the slopes this winter.
Otautahi (Christchurch) has without question, always been at the forefront of much of Aotearoa’s electronica movement and a number of the artists showcased here are at the leading edge of fresh musical adventures, in dubstep, jazz and bass and hip hop. As a group dedicated to supporting and furthering the advancement of new music and Christchurch acts, CHART is extremely excited and impressed by the excellent standard of tunes on CHARTDISC VOL 3 the downbeat chill edition, and recommends the listener play on high rotation.
CHARTDISC Volume 3 2010 has been hand-picked to be turned up loud for NZ Music Month 2010, is available from the 1st of May and is for promotional/broadcast only.
