Help yourself to a slice of NZ’s future soul
June 25th, live at Galatos, Substax perform tracks from their new album 'Electro Soul Plane', out now on Sugarlicks Recordings Aotearoa.
Substax are an electronic band in the mode of acts such as the Chemical Brothers, Royksopp and Massive Attack. Nick Farrands runs the electronic rig, which sets up the foundation of sound through the use of samplers, effects and a mixing desk. Live instruments complement the hypnotic electronic loops with Farrands on Fender Rhodes, Jason Johnston on electronic drum triggers & live sampler and Claudia Gunn on guitar and vocals. The mix of programming and live improvisation creates a sound that is mesmerizing, funky and soulful.
Digital artist Janine Randerson will also be mixing unique live video projections. The Substax' set will feature album guests including vocalist/MC Souljah Sist*r, who impressed at Auckland’s recent Heineken Thirst final as well as Nick Connor on trumpet and flugelhorn.
Substax formed in London eight years ago. Their work includes multi-media installations, film, television and radio work, collaborations with Timmy Schumacher and now a debut album.
The album sound incorporates deep production and drums with spacey electro synths and vocals, with tempos ranging from uptempo breaks to moody downtempo slices of electronic soul.
