Carlsberg Stonk Tour 2005
Posted: Sun Jun 5, 2005 11:15 am
Stonk Tour ’05 is an annual winter tour that THE WBC ventures on each year. Packing the trusty old winter woolies, the guys cram into a van towing a furniture trailer full of sound and lighting equipment on a jaunt that takes them around the country over the period of a fortnight. The event in its fourth year has made the winter season (despite the risky driving conditions) a popular time for THE WBC to tour. With the support of Carlsberg as the major sponsor, Stonk Tour ’05 will see the event bigger (and better) than before as it takes in more regions throughout New Zealand. Don’t miss THE WBC in action on the Stonk Tour ’05!

THE WBC

You could say that THE WBC, are hard to categorise and you’d be right. Although the group are more commonly seen as a ska band, THE WBC continue to push the boundaries of the genre creating a unique style that combines ska, rock, reggae and dub elements. With an all, original repertoire and a reputation for infectious, energetic live shows, THE WBC are without a doubt one of the New Zealand’s top live acts and best bands to party with.

"I will go outta my way to see 'em live at the nearest opportunity." - Chris Knox

Still an unsigned artist, THE WBC, use a D.I.Y and independent approach to making things happen for themselves. The band’s debut release was the ska septet EP (2000), which was later followed by the Ease Ya Mind (EP), which continues to sell steadily several pressings later. Ease Ya Mind, the title track was the band’s breakthrough single gaining significant radio airplay, a NZ On Air video grant, winner of the Project nZM initiative and a Juice TV Music Award nomination. Ease Ya Mind raised the bands profile across the country and following that was the release of the songs (and music videos) for Sick of It and Recline Dub.

In late 2004, THE WBC released the song Uncle Benny. This single and music video received significant radio and music television airplay, which led to the band pressing the single for retail due to popular demand. Uncle Benny also featured the vocal talent of MC Tyna. A prime example of the band progressively pushing the envelope combining ska and rock with a hip hop element. Along with having various songs selected for various compilations, Ol’ Skool was used as the title music for comic sports programme Pulp Sport.
