GAHU Media release for immediate use November 17 2005

GAHU ‘Shell Money’ Tour: Whakatane December 1
Gisborne December 2

GAHU have an infectious passion for the music they call Afro-Kiwi fusion. It is a funky New Zealand sound which encompasses Afrobeat, African juju music, traditional rhythms of Ghana, Kiwi jazz and funk. Their new album 'Shell Money' will be available from November 25.

The theme of this album is contained in the opening and closing tracks with their commentary on the futility and sadness of war, about soldiers who left their homes to fight and never returned, the destruction of one country by another.

Live performances have the added attraction of the energetic dancing of Mr Y.B., man from Ghana, and the sight & sound of the unusual drums from Ghana with their irresistible call. They can be found most Friday nights up at the London Bar in Auckland City. (Civic Tavern cnr Queen & Wellesley St )

On Thursday December 1st they are at The Boiler Room in Whakatane and Friday December 2nd The Poverty Bay Cub Gisborne.

GAHU have been making a name for themselves around the North Island and are a very popular festival act, audiences enjoying this energetic band from Grey Lynn.

Recent performance highlights
Whitianga Scallop Festival, New Plymouth Festival of Lights, Clevedon Food & Wine Festival, Bay of Islands Jazz & Blues Festival, Rotorua Streatfest, Devonport Wine & Food, National Jazz Festival, NZ Coffee Festival, K’Road Karnival, Manawatu International Jazz & Blues Festival.

Reviews of 'Shell Money' - hot off the press!

“Gahu stride between world music and jazz....with great energy, sociability and commitment, and their 'Hot Planet' album of last year still commands my CD player.
The new album ‘Shell Money’ doesn’t mess much with the likeable formula which brings various African guitar styles to the fore, although the title track has a fair smattering of the Pacific... musically uplifting stuff - but there is a serious subtext in places.
...I expect to be hauling this one out regularly come summer.”
Graham Reid NZ Herald November 2005

“Although Gahu have a very distinctive style, it could be quite understandable why some may find it a little challenging to pigeon hole their music. I agree with the liner notes that this album reveals Gahu with a serious passion for the music they call Afro-Kiwi.

'Shell Money' – their latest offering is a combination of some slick production... and an enormous ooze of talent ... Regardless of what you’re into, get out there and add 'Shell Money' to your collection, you won’t be disappointed.”
Justin Roys Drum Connexions Magazine November 2005

Reviews of 'Hot Planet'

“..the band’s performances are expansive, one minute rocking out, the next as mellow as a night under the stars. Their infectious, instrumental caress and fire overflows with international textures and jazz universality, and such ‘rhythm ‘n’ jazz Aotearoa’ can only be good for the soul. “
Brent Cardy Real Groove March 2004

“smooth, rhythmic and funky.” Marty Duda Citymix March 2004
