An evening of the poetry of BILLY CHILDISH
Posted: Wed Nov 23, 2005 8:54 pm
The ever-cultured velvet tiger presents:

An evening of the poetry of BILLY CHILDISH

As you may know, the legendary Billy Childish will be playing with his Buff Medways at the Kings Arms on Dec 4th.

But there is more to this gentleman than simply being an acclaimed innovator of the DIY rock’n’roll underground, his uncompromising musical adventures spanning three decades: Mr. Billy Childish is also a prolific artist, novelist, and poet, whose confessional works avoid the pretentious and conceptual, and cut right to the truth. Much like his music, really.

Over the span of a quarter of a century, and overcoming the hurdle of dyslexia, Billy Childish has published more than 40 collections of his poetry on his own imprint, Hangman Press. However, we at Velvet Tiger are aware that many of you are still yet to learn that there are more “books” in the world than those which come inside a box-set of CDs or vinyl, and wish to take this opportunity to present to you an introduction to the beguiling world of words as written by Mr Childish, spoken by Mr Childish.

Poems? Yes indeed, it’s another form of communication. not all that far removed from rock’n’roll. Think about it: Link Wray = poetry. Hasil Adkins = poetry. The Damned = poetry. Remember that just because a form has had its reputation sullied by dullards and spoiled by educational institutions, the real thing still has the power to speak to you.

At this point, it is worth considering this quote: “"I am not a painter, I am not a musician, and what sort of idiot would want to be a poet?". The answer to this may be determined at the former funeral home that is the Odeon Lounge, on Saturday Dec 3rd. To compliment this evening, the Nudie Suits will be performing following Mr Childish’s poetry readings.

This is a very limited-capacity event, and therefore tickets will only be available on the door. Get there early, because Billy Childish takes the podium at 9PM sharp, regardless of whether you have got your dithering self there by that time.
