New Zealand’s Annual Drum and Bass DJ Competition

Drum and bass bedroom DJs are being encouraged to enter Rumble in the Jungle to find New Zealand's top junglist. Over $4000 worth of prizes will go to the winner of the competition, now in its sixth year. Will it be you?

All around New Zealand there are bedroom DJs who aspire to play sets in the clubs but have yet to be discovered either by the public or promoters, often due to a lack of connections. Rumble in the Jungle gives bedroom DJs a chance to showcase their talent.

This year, the winner of Rumble in the Jungle can truly claim to be New Zealand’s best Drum and Bass DJ. For the first time there will be three regional competitions in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch with the top three DJs from each region going on to the final to be held in Wellington.

To be named Rumble in the Jungle champion, you must progress through various stages of competition.

First, entrants must submit a mix CD showcasing the best of their talent. These CDs go to experienced judges who pick the best 12 mixes from each region, with the DJs responsible for those mixes getting to compete in their respective regional event.

The regional events and the final are all held as live competitions, with the DJs going through a series of rounds, before placing being decided at the end. The top three DJs from each regional event continue on to the final event.

The final gets exciting when you look at the standard of prizes up for grabs in 2006. With Jansen Professional Audio and Lighting as major sponsor for the second year in a row, there is an Allen & Heath Xone32 Mixer to give to the winner. That is just the first in a list of incredible prizes which also features Serato Scratch Live, a contract to record a mix CD from Empathy Recordings, and a coveted DJ spot at the Phat07 New Years Eve Drum and Bass camp to be held close to Westport.

In 2005 (without the addition of the regional event stage) there were more than 40 mix submissions to the final which was held in Wellington, that list was then narrowed down to 14 DJs who then played in front of a sell out crowd. Top honours went to 2001 runner-up, DJ Flex (Jacob Webster), with second place going to DJ Cable (Matt Harris) who had previously placed in Heinekens 2003 Found@Thirst DJ Competition.

By taking the RITJ 05 title, Flex netted himself the Jansen supplied Allen & Heath Xone:32 DJ Mixer, among other great prizes. Since winning, Flex was accepted as one of 3 Kiwis to head along to the 2005 Red Bull Music academy held in Seattle, USA, the world’s leading electronic musician and DJ symposium, testimony to the ability of the competition to provide a leg up to local DJs. Following his return, Flex has travelled to Thailand to pursue his DJ and music career.

Previous winners and runner-ups have also received substantial exposure to the club scene. DJ Trei (runner up 2004) is now a regular club DJ in Wellingtons Drum and Bass scene and prolific producer. Previously completely unknown DJ Opuio (winner 2004) gained a residency at Valve during 2004/2005 before moving to Melbourne to work on his breaks production.

With Rumble in the Jungle is in its 5th year, amazing prizes on the line and with 4 very successful events and behind it, the time has come to find a new champion – will it be you?
