Grey Lynn Park Festival Review 19/11/06

Soul Roots of Grey Lynn Run Deep

The spirit and resolve of Greylynners shone through the torrential spring rain last Saturday to prevent their annual festival being cancelled by the weather for the second year in a row. As the crowds and the rain clouds began to gather,there was determination in the air, and everyone rallied to the situation to create an unforgettable occasion.

The old Grey Lynn swamp once known as Tukitukimuka, now known as Grey Lynn Park nearly flooded the funk of the soul bands of Grey Lynn. However, due to the determination of music co-ordinators Bud Hooper and Angie Tuisamoa, and the Festival committee, the fortitude and goodwill of the bands, sound companies and stall holders the event was able to proceed.

As tents and tarpaulins were dragged from everywhere possible the stalls opened and the music began. As the sound crews scrambled to protect the sound systems from the rain, the joyful music of the Mhara Marimbas started up at the Field Festa, spirits lifted, the audience came running and the day began.

This was folllowed by the cheerful and sunny music of the Jews Brothers, the new funky sound of GAHU on the Manuka Stage and Richmond Road School on the Rangitahi Stage.

Working against all odds on the Nikau stage, Tony McMasters & the Mainz crew finally got enough water off the stage to get it up nd running with local soul & reggae band Easy.

Even when the rain was at its heaviest the musicians continued to arrive to perform: Unity Pacific, The Brysons, One Million Dollars, Paul Barrett & Kid Gloves braved the conditions to put out great performances.

Later as the weather improved crowds danced to dDub, Hot Grits and the Batucada Sound Machine. Darcy Perry Blues Band and the Hiphop crew Definite & Bling roundied off a day of musical treats.

The Grey Lynn Festival has returned to its community roots and if the quality of the music is anything to go by, they run deep.
