DUB SYNDICATE TO PLAY NEW ZEALAND FOR FIRST TIME

New Zealand's shores have been graced by many of reggae music's best artists and Soundsplash '07 and the Motherland Collective are honoured to be adding more to the list.

Dub Syndicate, featuring a backing band consisting of Lincoln “Style” Scott and hopefully Lloyd Parks and Franklyn “Bubbler” Waul, will play their debut Kiwi show above the stunning west coast beaches of Raglan on February 23-24.

Already featuring the heavyweight dub sound of the Mad Professor and his son Joe Ariwa and some of the best domestic bass culture bands New Zealand and Australia has to offer Soundsplash '07 is set to be a massive experience.

"Spoken word, white noises, trancy music… that's what we're all about. It's not like a Madonna or Prince thing.”
• Style Scott

THE EXPECTED DUB SYNDICATE LINEUP FOR NZ TOUR WILL BE:

Drums - Lincoln “Style” Scott – Founding member of the legendary Roots Radics – Jamaican backing band to an entire history of reggae music. You name it and there's a good chance he played drums on it. Gregory Isaacs “Night Nurse”, Barrington Levy's “Under me Sensi” et al. (see feature bio attached).

Keyboards/electronics - Franklyn “Bubbler” Waul – Roots Radics keys man. Featured on Culture's “Two Sevens Clash” album, two Abyssinian LPs, played synths on Barrington Levy's “Here I Come”...again, the list could just go on and on.

Bass - Lloyd Parks – started as a vocalist working with the likes of Jackie Mittoo at Studio One under Sir Coxsone Dodd. Kingston-born Parks has gone on to be one of reggae's biggest names in bass. Working at Joe Gibbe's Channel One studio he played bass on Althea and Donna's “Uptown top Ranking” and Dave Barker and Ansel Collins' “Double Barrel”.

Keyboards/electronics – Alon Adiri – U.K-based founder of Fresh Records who has produced Primal Scream, the Cure and Bim Sherman.

Guitar - Vince Black – recorded with Black Uhuru, Sly Dunbar, Peter Tosh etc.

DUB SYNDICATE is probably the most futuristic roots dub band around since Style Scott and U.K producer Adrian Sherwood started collaborating in England in the 1980s. The pair produced a brace of great albums (Pounding System, Tunes from the Missing Channel) on Sherwood's own esteemed On-U Sound label with a sort of genre crossover feel, but with definite reggae roots.

As he gained more of the direction reins, Style Scott set about creating his vision of Dub Syndicate as a semi-vocal band and that has largely been to the fore in many of their albums since the early 1990s.

Dub Syndicate have gone on to become a more roots vibed act, drawing heavily on Rastafarianism while keeping a forward movement concept to their sound. This sound, provided by one of the best reggae backing bands this country has ever seen, will be what Soundsplash audiences will experience.

American music journalist Bart Platenga said this of the Dub Syndicate live experience:

“...the evening was sanctified pyrotechnica with speakers emitting deep, swelling, subterranean tremors – trenchant, dilated, and insistent like a train pregnant with 100 bass instruments rumbling through a dense fog into the cauldron of the solar plexus...”

Dub Syndicate’s collective of collaborators reads like a who’s who of dub and much, much more: Bim Sherman, Jah Wobble, “Deadly” Headley Bennett, Flabba Holt, Prince Far I, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Michael Franti, Cedric Myton (The Congos), Gregory Isaacs, Big Youth, Capleton, Luciano and Junior Reid.
