The Renderers Posted: Wed Mar 14, 2007 4:45 pm The Renderers return! These Southern Country artists are heading off shore for a wee while, but before they depart they are doing one last show in Auckland, The Renderers are based around duo Brian and Maryrose Crook, whom live in Lyttleton, Christchurch and recently opened for Joanna Newsom and Bill Callahan. The Renderers enjoys a cult following in the US with the kind of country music that a character from either a William Faulkner short story or a David Lynch film might whistle while scalding a hog. Their songs are alternately knuckle-white and grangrene-black. There’s a tincture of Mississippi carried on the Antarctic wind of Port Chalmers: Brian plays lead guitar for The Terminals and the improvisatory Flies Inside the Sun. He recently released his second semi-solo album of 4-track recordings under the moniker Bible Black. As one reviewer noted, ‘the characters in Crook's songs all suffer various heartaches.’ Mary Rose is also a painter (although her easel is not of tarnished gilt). Represented by Brooke Gifford Gallery, she was curated by Emma Bugden in City Gallery’s Telecom Prospect 2004: New Art New Zealand (Wellington). Her canvasses are a visual corollary to the Southern Gothic of The Renderers’ songs. Mary Rose has an exhibition of new work coming up at the Unitec Gallery opening on the 29th March aswell as a residency involving floor talks in the gallery and speaking with students of the Unitec. In adddition she won the Development Award of the Wallace Art Trust last year - $15,000 towards an international residency (she is currently in discussion for an Australian Residency) Live The Renderers with guests white Swan | Black Swan Saturday 31st March Kings Arms Tavern |
