SwampFest 07
Posted: Mon Apr 23, 2007 8:58 pm
Bringing New Zealand Music Month home is Palmerston North’s own original music festival, SwampFest. If you have never seen a local original band, SwampFest 07 is the perfect chance to do so.

Named for the city’s origins as a primordial swamp, the title belies the diversity and quality of music on offer. SwampFest 07 brings together big Rock, soulful Hip Hop, banging Live Electronica, wistful Indie strumming, and sweet Acoustic sounds that perfectly reflect the breadth of the Palmerston North scene.

To really capture a snapshot of the local music scene, SwampFest 07 includes two new shows and goes multi venue! On Thursday the 10th of May, Bar Mode will play host to Solo acts, and on Saturday the 12th, Hip Hop and live Electronica will bring the noise! Bar Mode in Coleman Mall is the recently opened dedicated, licensed, Live Music venue. Repeating the success of 2006, The Globe Theatre plays host to three All Ages events featuring 12 bands, Friday the 11th to Sunday the 13th of May.

Another new addition, SwampFest 07 also now includes its very own 'Rock N Roll Swap Meet and Craft Market'. Your chance to trade that old Split Enz seven inch for a handful of Slave Recordings Badges!

Leading up to the shows will be a series of workshops and seminars featuring an awesome array of local experts... A fantastic chance to learn song writing tricks and tips from Dwayne Yule of seminal NZ punk band Flesh D-Vice... How to capture great pictures of your favorite band live with professional photographer Doug of 'Umbra Digital' and semi professional Steve of 'Gigantic'... Lessons in gear and technique for budding home studio engineers and a tour around the new Stomach Pro Tools systems with resident 'ears' Matt Tucker... And finally on Wednesday night, all, really all, you ever wanted to know about touring New Zealand with the legendary Blink.

The inaugural SwampFest held in 2004, featured 8 bands over two nights. Following on from its success, SwampFest 05 ran for three days, featured 14 bands and culminated with a live DVD. SwampFest 06 became an all ages event and ran for an entire week with the DVD release show a month later another huge success.

SwampFest 07 has added new shows to cater for a more diverse music community and even has its own Swap Meet and Craft Market. Behind this ongoing strength is the high level of support musicians receive from community groups and businesses alike - original music is nurtured and performed at The Stomach (a community recording studio, supported by the PN City Council), played on Radio Control 99.4 FM, and sold at Mango Music.

SwampFest 07 is made possible by Radio Control 99.4 FM, Creative Sounds, Creative Communities, Audio Progress Ltd, Mango Music and Outpost Digital Media.
