Napalm Death Official Press Release
Posted: Tue Jul 10, 2007 5:02 pm
There are few bands in modern music that can truthfully claim to have inspired multiple genres of music while having originated a genre of their own. Napalm Death is one such band.

From an unassuming beginning in the burgeoning Birmingham punk scene of the mid 1980's, through multiple line-up changes, personal tragedies - including the recent death of long-time guitarist Jesse Pintado - and an unwavering dedication to stylistic progression, NAPALM DEATH stand strong in 2007 as a more fearsome yet accomplished musical unit than ever before. Universally acknowledged as the band that invented the 'grindcore' genre - an abrasive combination of both punk and metal - the Anglo-American quartet have come a long way since their oft-heralded 1987 debut Scum. While this album, regarded by many as an extreme music classic, and much of their other early work such as 1989's From Enslavement to Obliteration owes a great inspirational debt to the popular hardcore punk movement of the time, it was 1990's Harmony Corruption and 1992's Utopia Banished that saw the core, recognisable NAPALM DEATH line-up locked in place.

NAPALM DEATH's original fusion of the political trappings of hardcore and the sonic brutality of extreme metal began to take shape during these formative years, and it was this explosive cocktail style that would lay the blueprint for the bands progression through the 1990's and into the 21st century - a sound continually being reforged and refined, but always retaining the elements that made them what they are: total sonic punishment, a ferocious lyrical and thematic disdain for government and religion and a furiously energetic live performance.

The band last visited New Zealand shores over a decade ago, playing Auckland's Powerstation on the back of their 1996 album Diatribes. While it has been a long time between antipodean drinks for the Brummie lads, their enthusiasm for returning to these Shaky Isles is clear: "We can't wait to return to New Zealand" says guitarist Mitch Harris "Our new material is the best we've recorded to date and we cannot wait to perform it live for our loyal fans who have waited so long for us to return there". Given the passionate cross-generation following the band have throughout New Zealand, it's clear that these "loyal fans" will not be disappointed.

NAPALM DEATH will be a live extreme music experience like no other; ably complimented with tour support from controversial Auckland metallers GRAYMALKIN and a host of New Zealand's finest punk and metal talent also in tow. The band play in Wellington for the first time on Monday September 10th at the San Francisco Bathhouse (Level 1, 171 Cuba St, City) and then two days later on Wednesday September 12th at The King's Arms in Auckland (59 France St, Newton). Tickets are on-sale now from TICKETEK and REAL GROOVY nationwide.
