Motorhead to play New Plymouth
Posted: Thu Aug 9, 2007 5:14 pm
Heavy metal legend Motorhead will perform its single New Zealand concert in New Plymouth in October.

It is the city's second entertainment coup in two days, following yesterday's announcement that Elton John will play at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands on December 6.

The British head-bangers are doing one New Zealand concert during their Kiss of Death world tour and that gig is at the TSB Stadium on October 19.

Fronted by 61-year-old Lemmy Kilmister, Motorhead has been entertaining rock fans since it formed in 1975.

Venture Taranaki event manager Garry Sharpe-Young says Motorhead is probably best-known for songs such as Ace of Spades and Overkill.

"They are their classics," Mr Sharpe- Young says.

He predicts the three-member group will have wide appeal, with the audience ranging between die-hard older fans to teenagers.

Motorhead was last in New Zealand in 2005.

This year's concert is being pitched as the roughest, toughest, most ear- ringing tour of the year.

"They unquestionably remain the real deal. The trio are a proud institution in a world where for too many, real rock and roll is a forgotten art, a genre that's only dragged out when the T-shirt looks good."

Kilmister originally wanted to call the band Bastard, but was warned by his manager that he'd never get a slot on Top of the Pops with that sort of name, so he chose Motorhead.

While band members have come and gone over the years, Kilmister – a former roadie for Jimi Hendrix – has remained since the beginning.

Motorhead's fast style of heavy metal was regarded as groundbreaking in the late 1970s and considered a forerunner to the frantic sounds of speed metal and thrash metal. Kilmister has always preferred to describe Motorhead's music simply as rock and roll.

More recently, the band has moved to the mainstream, performing live at WrestleMania events and, in 2004, contributing You Better Swim to the soundtrack of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. In 2005 the band received its first Grammy.

Opening for Motorhead at the stadium are the bands Rose Tattoo, World War Four and 8 Foot Sativa.

Tickets go on sale on August 17 and are available through Ticketek.

The first 500 ticket buyers to take their ticket to The Rock Shop, in New Plymouth, will get a free copy of Metal – The Definitive Guide, a book detailing the history of heavy metal.

Hahaha, I love the irony of that - the manager would have had no idea that a Motorhead was a slang term for a speed user at the time Laughing

"We're not metal, just very fast rock n roll"

October's big Motorhead show in New Plymouth has had some of the support bands shuffled around. Now, it seems Aussie rockers Rose Tattoo are no longer playing, but in their stead comes New Zealand's own answer to Motorhead, the legendary Sticky Filth.

Also, filling out the bill even further are Dawn of Azazel and Paris in Flames. 8 Foot Sativa and World War Four are also still playing.

Tickets are on sale now from Ticketek for $98 plus booking fee.
