Toots and Grooves

New Zealand’s first annual Ska Fest – Friday 25 & Saturday 26 January (Auckland Anniversary Weekend) will feature Ska, Roots, Punk, Dub, Indie, Rock, Electronic and acoustic music of all genres, with a strong focus on ska culture.

Nothing if not ambitious, Philipp says, “I envisage the Toots&Grooves Annual Ska Festival becoming the largest, most anticipated annual festival of its kind in Australasia.”

The festival reflects the growing interest in ska music and its related genres and sub-cultures and also represents the relentless efforts of people who have been working towards getting ska music firmly established in New Zealand. There have always been ska fans in New Zealand that have created forums to promote and enjoy ska but in the last ten years the genre has grown to become an established fixture in Aotearoa’s musical culture.

“Ska bands from all over the country have come forward and are very keen to support this festival, Philipp says. “It’s amazing to experience how helpful people in the ska scene are because it is so positive and tight and supportive of the genre all over the world. Once people really get into it they realise the variety that ska music offers in terms of genres and that the vibe of being at a ska event is second to none. It’s like having a party with 1,000 of your best friends.”

“Even those that do not favour ska music as their main choice still appreciate the vibe and energy it has and the fact that people give so much of their time and energy towards keeping the scene going strong.”

Mr Jaser has already confirmed about 40 acts with over a dozen ska bands, including The Managers, The WBC, The Bones and The Offbeats and several emerging artists from a budding and vibrant local music scene including Groove Assembly, Pacific Bass Culture and Black Chrome as well as Prince Tui Teka Tribute Band Children Of The Mist led by brother Dave Teka.

Tickets are priced at $60 for the two days, camping included and under 14’s free. Tickets available from Real Groovy, Cosmic Corner, Ticketek and directly from the venue at Tatum Park.

Tatum Park is 10km north of Otaki and 10km south of Levin on State Highway One .
