The mighty Mtyland lands in Auckland, Christchurch
Posted: Tue Sep 23, 2008 3:42 pm
The reviews are in, the show is great and its heading to New Zealand's two biggest cities.

Mtyland features the homecoming of one of New Zealand's most outstanding choreographers Claire O'Neil, presenting a new work Mtyland for the 2008 Footnote Forte Season after returning to New Zealand after a decade of dance performance and choreography with some of Europe's finest dance institutions.

Forte is an initiative by Footnote Dance, New Zealand's national contemporary dance company, to present work by an outstanding choreographer. The work was first performed in Wellington on September 5 and 6, 2008.

O'Neil's Mtyland explores the notion that in "nothingness there is everything" – if you had an empty space, what would you do with it?

Mtyland takes a look at the individual’s responsibility for our actions, how we imprint ourselves in the empty space, and how we can fill ourselves to an overload.

The music score is designed by Herman Martin (UK), with proposed use of music by celebrated indie group Battles. Directed by Deirdre Tarrant, Footnote dancers are Sarah Knox, Anita Hunziker, Erynne Gleeson, Hannah Elks, Jesse Wikiriwhi and Jeremy Poi.

The programme also includes a return of Malia Johnston's False Waltz, a highlight of the Footnote Made in New Zealand series earlier 2008, and the new work from Raewyn Hill called Nest, devised during her time as artist-in-residence at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.

Review excerpts:

"An enigmatic work, thematically complex yet thought provoking." Jennifer Shennan, Dominion Post

"Deirdre Tarrant continues to make bold and risky choices for Footnote Dance Company as she strives for her vision of innovation and excellence. This season the company arrives at an exhilarating new level." Lyne Pringle, Theatreview

"It was a pleasure to watch the works of talented New Zealand choreographers and I would certainly recommend the show to anyone with an interest in contemporary movement." Shruti Navathe, Lumiere
