Get your kicks with The Braxton Hicks

*Another oldie but a goodie...and hey, at least it's from this year, right?!

February sees the release of Hamilton boys, The Braxton Hicks’ NZ on Air single, Fake. To mark such a fine event, band members Joel Flyger, Mack Lynn and Mitch Currin threw a single release party on Friday night.
We managed to show up at Ward Lane half way through the opening act – hey don’t blame me this time…blame the men and their make-up!
By this time, the lads had already drawn in an impressive crowd, and there were still a range of ages behind us filing into the venue. I even spotted some proud parents having a grand old time at the tables…how awesome is that?
Plus, for once I didn’t feel like the oldest nana in the room!

Collecting a surprisingly cheap drink from the bar, I made my way to the rest of the bunch swaying to psychedelic rockers, The Sheriffs. Three Words was clearly one of the favourites of their set showing off lead singer, Hadley Badger’s profound vocals.
Blurting out the lyrics, ‘you don’t love me’ in an erratic manner very much like Jim Morrison, it’s easy to see how this band gets such a great reception from both young and old.
Finishing up with another crowd pleaser, Don’t Do What I’ve Done, the boys were quick to head outside to join the rest of us spilling out onto the driveway in search of fresh air, and lost friends.

It wasn’t long before BDO performers, The Lookie Loo’s took to the stage with a roar. They opened with Will I be Lonely? and Wiggle and Move, before heading into some favourites off their EP titled Timing is Everything.
By the time Count to Ten was blasted out, it’s safe to say most people had their dancing shoes on, and if not, they were crowd surfing…yup…with those low ceilings…
Next Year saw raised bottles as did Sweet Release, and I must say by the end of Back of My Mind, my arms were covered in booze from the sweaty guy next to me. The close of their set came too quickly, but with all the crazy antics and (dare I say it) smells going on in that room, to be honest, for a change I was OK with that!

I’m thinking most people felt the same, heading towards the entrance way which now seemed way, way too small. Outside, it was refreshing to be amongst the crowd who were chatting like budgies, waiting in anticipation for the stars of the evening. Now I know it sounds super hippyish to say this, but you could feel the love out there!
The Hicks were quick to start their set, so the venue, once again filled up. Soon it was tightly packed full of eager yellers, dancers and hand-clappers ready for the lads’ show. Starting with a finger-popping tune, Falling, it was clear these guys were all set to put on an awesome performance.

Now, anyone who knows me knows I love a song with good tambourine action in it, so when Would You Say started, it’s safe to say I was pretty excited. Seems the rest of the crowd were too with all the hand-clapping and foot-tapping going on. At one point a guy tried to hop on stage, but, to my delight was quickly dismissed by front-man, Joel Flyger. Why people think they can get away with that kind of action, I don’t know…but I’m glad this guy didn’t. At least now the standard had been set for the rest of the show though, right?!
From then on all the bouncing and shenanigans were kept on the floor so the Hicks could carry out the rest of their set.

One song which saw more yelling and dancing than a Greek wedding was Master Shrug, which features on the band’s Myspace page.
Sweet treats of the show were Briony and Nightwatch which were both shortly followed by being covered in more booze from a different sweaty guy next to me…what’s up with that?! Whatever it was, that’s why you should always wear black to gigs.
Finishing up with an obvious favourite which has been performed at their last few gigs was sing-a-long, Green Car. It was awesome to see not only the crowd, but the guys really get into it, ending with drummer, Mack Lynn throwing his drumsticks at the stage.

Much to the disappointment of their fans, there was no encore. Instead they joined the rest of us outside to enjoy some cool air probly followed by celebratory drinks…and after such a fine show, why not?
