Action + Diggers Back Bar = The Bleeders Posted: Wed Nov 5, 2008 6:46 am They're coming back to the Tron this weekend to play with popular lads Eqwanox, and seeing as I can't go to that gig to review it, I thought I'd just post an old one. Heh. It’s fair to say that I’ve neglected Diggers Back Bar for some time now. In fact, the last gig I went to at the place was about a year ago when NZ sweethearts The Brunettes performed to a small awkward group before touring their way around the country. Turning up for The Bleeders show on Friday night was the complete opposite – some might say a punk rock treat, welcomed by easily over a hundred open arms. The back bar was packed full of hood and cap wearers which was a nice change of scenery from the last few shows I’ve been to around Hamilton. Right away it was obvious that we were in for a colourful performance…not only from The Bleeders but also from the tattoo sporting crowd packing out the venue. Opening acts were fellow Aucklanders Los Muertos and This is This along with Hamilton’s own powerpop rockers Equanox, who I missed due to the ‘don’t want to be the first ones there’ attitude I’ve adopted. Why you would choose this way of thinking when such an awesome Hamilton band is performing, I don’t know. I just hope that by the time I get another chance to see them, I’ve snapped out of it! At about 11:30-ish The Bleeders boys pushed their way through the moshers to the small stage that made me wonder how they would contain themselves on it. The last time I saw them was at The Transmission Room in Auckland and even that space wasn’t big enough for the energetic 20-somethings! Yelling at the crowd in traditional Bleeders style, front-man Angelo Munro told everyone to get their asses up the front before getting stuck into The Black Widow Creeps. Throwing themselves around the stage the boys performed other hits, All that Glitters and Bleeding Heart which provided the crowd with ample entertainment on and off-stage. We were treated to crowd-surfing and moshing so hard-out that the guards had to remove a couple of guys who were on the brink of a fist-fight. Already with more action than an Arnie movie, it was hard to imagine what might come next with these guys who were now yelling at the crowd to join in and get mashed! Getting right into the set it was almost scary watching Angelo Munro looking possessed throwing his mic at the floor before screaming out a much anticipated song of their set, So Lonely. Handing it over to the crowd to yell out the chorus made the shoving up the front even worse - or better in The Bleeders books, seeing a few more angry men getting dragged onto the street to sort themselves out. She Screamed she Loved Me will forever hold a place in my heart with two of the best memories from this show. Guitarist Ian King enjoyed a few complimentary slaps on the ass from the delighted girlies up the front. This was soon followed by bassist Gareth Stack wearing a cheesy grin busting out some hot Grease Lightning moves before ending their set with Nightmares. It’s obvious these guys love performing, so if you ever feel the need for a shot of action or inspiration, see them – they’re wicked! Amanda Ratcliffe |
