I (heart) Dick...Dick Dynamite and the Doppelgangers, that is…
Posted: Thu Nov 6, 2008 6:35 am
These guys are gonna' be big. Just sayin'.

Falling in love with Dick Dynamite and the Doppelgangers was as easy as one, two, three for me. First it was the name. Second was Dick’s big fat bass. And third was their kooky performance at Ward lane on Saturday night to celebrate the launch of on-line store, Nick’s Music Basement.

Before getting into the rockabilly jazz-fest, we were treated to the sweet and somewhat hippy-ish music performed by Hamilton cuties, Bearcat. It surprised me later on to read that they describe their music as Chinese pop, but I still give them five stars just for the effort they went to – painting their faces with stripes for the occasion! We were then entertained by Damsels whose tunes were so catchy that by the end of their second song all feet on the floor were uncontrollably tapping. I even saw some spazzy, legs everywhere kind of dancing – fantastic!

By now, the reasonable sized crowd were ready for a psychobilly show by one of Hamilton’s most unique acts, Dick Dynamite and the Doppelgangers. Bassist, Dick hit the stage to sort out the instruments before being accompanied by stand-up drummer Chubby Chip - With names like this; it’s hard not to love these guys!
Next it was guitarist Captain Featherbelly who took his sweet time joining the 50’s style band, but all was forgiven when the lads got into their action packed set.

Sounding very much like the beginning of the Pink Panther’s theme tune The Doppelgangers opened with Be My Abductee transforming Ward Lane very quickly into an underground New York jazz club.
On the dance floor there were a combination of steps from jiving and swinging through to my favourite to watch – arms and legs in all directions. These guys make it hard to keep your hips from popping out of place, but we managed…just! Although, I must admit that by the end of the night, balls were pretty sore. And when I say balls, I mean the ones on my feet, silly!

Morte D’ Amore and Suicide Zombie were among the ridiculously well played set which saw more uncontrollable spazmatic dancing on the floor. At one stage I wondered if we were on the set of that Johnny Depp movie, Cry Baby…all we needed was the screaming girls in rock n’ roll skirts and we’d be there for sure!
A couple of songs which feature on the band’s Myspace page, Violent Video Games and Bout You went down extremely well with the growing crowd - particularly with a group of girls rocking out up the front, who I swear, if they had a chance to throw there knickers at Dick Dynamite, they would have.

The lads covered a few classics by The Ramones, Johnny Cash and Elvis, but to be perfectly honest with you, I much rather preferred their own original tunes which scream success.
I Like Girls Who Can’t Dance Well was one of my favourites – maybe because of the name, maybe because of the way these guys made it sound like its hip not to dance well! Whatever it was, they’ve got a certain charm about them that keeps you wanting more.
