Bungy’s big birthday bash
Posted: Thu Nov 6, 2008 3:43 pm
Queenstowners are invited to AJ Hackett Bungy’s spectacular birthday bash on Friday 14 November to mark the 20th anniversary of the world’s first commercial bungy jump.

Rock legend Jordan Luck, will join two great up and coming Kiwi bands – Tahuna Breaks and Rockquest runners-up Slur-Tones from Mt Aspiring College in Wanaka – on stage at Queenstown Memorial Hall for the ‘20 Years of Bungy Birthday Bash’.

Luck, former frontman for the Exponents and one of New Zealand’s finest singer songwriters, will be performing well-known Exponents hits like ‘Why does love do this to me?’ and ‘Victoria’ with help from his current band Luck.

“It will be a huge night to remember,” says AJ Hackett Bungy founder Henry van Asch.

Dubbed one of the most promising acts to break into the New Zealand music scene in recent years, the unique combination of Tahuna Breaks’ funk-fuelled grooves, reggae and just a hint of drum’n’bass has made them a favourite on dance floors nationwide.

Their popularity has seen them share the stage with top Kiwi bands such as Fat Freddy’s Drop, Concord Dawn, Tiki Live, Katchafire, Cornerstone Roots, WBC, Sola Rosa and Unity Pacific, as well as appearing on Top of the Pops, Coast and Juice TV Music Awards.

Still in their final year of school, local three-piece band Slur-Tones has blown away critics and audiences alike with their alt-pop songs and exciting live performances. Music critics have likened the buzz and vibe they create to that of great Kiwi touring bands of the ‘80s like Blam Blam Blam and Hip Singles.

Henry is delighted to see the business he and AJ Hackett founded reach its 20-year milestone and is looking forward to celebrating with a party like no other.

“AJ Hackett Bungy parties have always been pretty legendary, but this is a real landmark for us and we’d love absolutely everyone to help us celebrate,” he says.

“So many people in the community have been involved with Bungy over the last 20 years in some way, shape or form - whether it’s been working for us, jumping, bringing in visitors, supporting our events and so on - that we want to show our thanks.

“I’m also looking forward to catching up with hundreds of former staff who are coming from all around the world. We’ve had close to 2,000 people work for us over the past 20 years and I can’t wait to see who turns up.”

Concert tickets cost $20 and are available from Queenstown’s AJ Hackett Bungy Centre on the corner of Shotover and Camp streets.
