Brasil Summer Sessions Posted: Sun Dec 14, 2008 11:29 am BRASIL SUMMER SESSIONS Saturday 20th Dec - Roda de Samba at Southern Cross Bar (35 Able Smith St) From 2pm with Feijoada & Caipirinha - Traditional Brazilian Cuisine Featuring: Alda Rezende, Isabella Rovo, Julie Bevan, Darryn Sigley and Ze Leal. Sunday 21st Dec - Brazilian Concert at The Garden Club (13b Dixon St) at 7pm Doors open from 6pm. $10 (special $5 Beers from 6-8pm) Featuring virtuoso guitarist Beto Lopes & jazz fusionist singer Elaine Abras - from Brazil for a very short time in NZ hosted by Roda de Samba followed by freestyle jams with musicians from Brazil and Aotearoa. Beto Lopes is a guitar/ bass player, singer and composer. He has played with many Brazilian musicians as Milton Nascimento, Toninho Horta and Hermeto Pascoal and other musicians from all around the world as Andy Summers (The Police). He has already recorded five solo albums and played in Free Jazz Festival in Rio de Janeiro and in European Jazz Festival in 2006. www.myspace.com/betolopesbh Elaine Abras is a composer, guitarist and singer from Minas Gerais that has got a clean, strong and natural voice. She has passed through different styles and fusion music which makes her style unique in Brazilian and international jazz. Elaine has made many presentations around Brazil in different theaters and bars and recently spent 4 years in England studying and playing music. www.myspace.com/elaineabras Alda Rezende is known for the originality of her voice and the musical quality of her repertoire. She has released three solo albums and has done many other collaborations. Alda has performed alongside some important Brazilian artists, such as Elza Soares and João Bosco. In NZ she participated in the project OE Brazil, released the album Traveller, has performed in many festivals and is currently also member of Zirigidum. Isabella Rovo - from Brasilia, Brazil's capital, Isabella sings and plays guitar with the groove of samba, bossa-nova and other regional rhythms. In New Zealand since the beginning of 2008, Isabella participates in Wellington Batucada and put together the musical groups Brazealand and Roda de Samba, which perform a variety of Brazilian styles. www.brazealand.blogspot.com Julie Bevan - studied guitar at the NZ School of Music and has recorded several cds, recorded for film, tv and radio. She has traveled to Brazil several times to study Brazilian music and leads many groups dedicated to performing this style in NZ. These groups have performed in many festivals, including the NZ International Festival of Arts. Currently she is working on a number of compositions to be recorded next year in Brazil. Darryn Sigley -is a Wellington musician who has been heavily influenced by Brazilian Music and Culture. He was introduced to Samba at University and has continued to experience samba as musical director of Wellington Batucada and in Brazil and overseas with various projects. Darryn has appeared with Kiwi bands such as Fly my Pretties, Blackseeds and Batucada Sound Machine. Ze Leal, percussionist from Bahia - the strongest drumming state in Brazil – performs a great variety of rhythms. In his hometown he played with ‘Tio Barnabé’, one of the most famous group in North Eastern Brazil specialized in forró and also supported other groups such as the internationally known Olodum. In New Zealand he is member of Brazealand and heads a new group ‘Funk Junk’, which plays on recycled instruments. Patrick Bleakley - is an extraordinary bass player from New Zealand. During his career he has collaborated with names such as Bruno Lawrence in Blerta and many projects. Nowadays he performs with several other musicians and bands, such as Jonathan Crayford and Anthony Donaldson. |
