The Woolshed Sessions Posted: Mon Mar 16, 2009 6:52 pm The Woolshed Sessions - the band that grew from a jam in a former shearing shed in Takaka - is heading to Auckland and Hawke’s Bay for a series of stringing me along shows. Expect lashings of lap-steel guitar, lush vocal harmony sing-a-longs and banjo punctuations when The Woolshed Sessions perform in April at Leigh Sawmill, Monte Cristo Room at Toto, Auckland and for two exclusive shows in The Underground Cellar at Black Barn Vineyards, Hawke’s Bay. It will be the first time The Woolshed Sessions crew of Age Pryor, Jess Chambers, Justin 'Firefly' Clarke, Andy Hummel, Peter Hill, Brett Skinner, Al Fraser and Dr Lee Prebble have gathered together beyond the Paekakariki turn off. With musical connections to Fly My Pretties, The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra, The Black Seeds, Rosy Teacaddy, Tahu, Rio Hemopo and Rhombus, the collective originated from a week of jamming in a Takaka woolshed then owned by film-maker Gaylene Preston. The low-fi recordings captured the ambient resonance of the space the music was created and recorded in – a converted woolshed with bare timber floors, lined with plywood and clad in corrugated iron – and the rest is history. In late 2008 a limited edition Woolshed Sessions album - featuring photographs by Andy Morley-Hall and design by Creature – was released and quickly sold out. The first public Woolshed Sessions shows started with a rush for tickets in hometown Wellington and the buzz spread to the Nelson Arts Festival - close to the inspirational roots of Takaka Valley and Captain Cooker beer. More recently they've played beneath the night sky, to thousands drawn like moths to the Botanic Gardens Soundshell and at Neudorf Winery. The Nelson Mail “From the awesome guitar rifts to the instantly catchy lyrics this haunting and melodic album gets better every time I listen to it.” Simon Pearse, Central Hawkes Bay Mail “Typical of the New Zealand psyche of course, there is never simply a sunny day without some darkness creeping in, so too some of the songs have lyrics which belie their surface sprightliness.'” Graham Reid, www.elsewhere.co.nz “Chambers has the most immediate pop gifts. Hey You and Stringing Me Along have irresistible choruses that belie the heartache lurking in the lyrics. Hummel brings whimsy with Easily Distracted and I’ll Not Bother You Anymore, a contender for the most apologetic pick-up song ever, and Pryor gives the project weight with his more complex material. Violence on the Quiet and Acceptance match dark ruminations to the album’s least predictable song structures." RE: The Woolshed Sessions Posted: Sat Apr 25, 2009 10:22 am In late 2007 a bunch of Wellington musicians got together in an old woolshed in Takaka Valley, New Zealand, to record some songs. From this summertime gathering at the top of the South Island, The Woolshed Sessions project was born: a critically acclaimed limited edition album and a live show that sold out by word of mouth alone. The Woolshed Sessions is a fresh approach for New Zealand songwriting and performance, reflective of the woolshed’s idyllic Golden Bay surroundings, and distinguished by lashings of lap-steel guitar, lush vocal harmony sing-a-longs, taonga puoro – traditional Maori instruments – and banjo punctuations. This concert promises to be unforgettable “They have captured this place, holding it spinning in their senses and allowing it to burst forth as music” – Barbara Stowe, The Nelson Mail “Typical of the New Zealand psyche of course, there is never simply a sunny day without some darkness creeping in, so too some of the songs have lyrics which belie their surface sprightliness” – Graham Reid, www.elsewhere.co.nz www.myspace.com/woolshedsessions Saturday 16 May 7-10pm, Raumati Sth Memorial Hall. Tickets $18 pre-sale, $20 on the door. Limited door sales. Available from Lembas Cafe Raumati Sth, Kingdom Music on Kapiti rd, Lush Gallery in Raumati and the Paekakariki Fruit Supply Raumati Sth Memorial Hall. 7 Tennis Court Rd Raumati Sth. Heading North/South on SH1 take Raumati South turnoff (Poplar Av.). Second left onto Tennis court Rd. |
