Sandbox Studio presents...

Art-rockers Noise, trip-hop ensemble Metrosideros, and chamber-pop chanteuse Dani Mogin are joining forces for an evening of musical exploration, combining intimate, personal songwriting with electronic rhythms and expansive rock sounds.

A collective of musicians with diverse backgrounds and an international perspective, we’ve found community in that diversity. While our music varies wildly, we have something fundamental in common; a love for creating beauty from experiences that have not been painless. Each of us carries mileage, and along the way have each grown to value rawness, wry humour and vulnerability.

In this show, we’re merging a broad palette of musical influences into a cohesive whole. Our sounds vary, but each of us is celebrating the same joy, the same pain, and the same deep-seated need for fearless self-expression.

Daniela Mogin is an accordionist, pianist and songwriter based in Wellington, New Zealand. Having been a long-time member of the Balkinistas (RIP), Dani's music is steeped in the folk-music flavours of the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe and her homeland Serbia. As a songwriter, Dani performs solo and with guest musicians to create a characterful blend of songs and instrumentals. Her lyrics are deeply personal and playful as they unfold through the sounds of smoky chamber pop.
In addition, Dani is a co-owner of a recording studio in central Wellington, Sandbox Studio, through which she aims to create an additional channel for new artists to find their voice and collaborate in their own artistic discovery.

Noise is an experimental art-rock six-piece, founded in New York City and based in Wellington, New Zealand. Fronted by Will Marshall, a songwriter and producer with a swaggering, articulate baritone, Noise work with a palette borrowed from contemporary art-rock, modernist poetry, the weirder edges of electronic music, indie pop and post-punk.

Noise’s music is cerebral, contemplative, and sometimes bitingly aggressive. They move seamlessly between spacious post-rock compositions, tight garage rock grooves, and deep trip-hop, constructing vivid musical backdrops to Will’s blackly comic narratives.

With Metrosideros, Matt and Ellie go deep into trip hop, evoking a smoky early jazz chanteuse, weaving through an imagined cinema soundtrack, on a downtempo foundation of breakbeats and dub. The songs are personal and universal, filled with love and loss, chaos and zen, and paradoxes, nostalgia for what never was but could be again.
