Paul Scott of pop mechanix at the Dux 25/05/06 Posted: Mon May 16, 2005 8:18 am Paul Scott songwriter for the legendary Pop Mechanix performs a one off show at the Dux de Lux on Wednesday the 25th of May. Paul will be playing a selection of his compositions for Pop Pechanix plus some of his new material he performs with his sydney based band Montana. Pop Mechanix came to fame in the 1979 originally starting life as Splash Alley with Dick Driver fronting the band. They changing their name to Pop Mechanix after Barry Jenkins ( zm's doctor rock ) said he didn't like that name. The band climbed quickly along the road to success with Mike Chunn of APRA and recently ex Split Enz commenting that Paul Scott was the countries best songwriter of the time. This along side the likes of Neil Finn and Dave Dobbyn was high praise. Releasing three successful singles including their hit 'Jumpin' out a Window' the band jumped the ditch to Sydney only to hit legal hassles over their name and lose the right to use it in Sydney and Adelaide to a nothing band called popular mechanics. This pretty much flawed the bands momentum and they split and returned to NZ. In late 85 the band regrouped and launched themselves again with an EP and successful single. Most of the bands material from this period was never released, as is the case with a large percentage of their creative output. Failsafe Records is marking the bands prolific unreleased output with a series of five cds available as a set or separately marking the four separate phases of the band plus a live disc of the 1985 line up. Paul will be joined by guest musicians and performing songs from throughouthis career in the intimate and friendly atmosphere of the Dux de Lux. Admission is free. CDs will be available at the venue. |
