“Recently, there has been a narrative going round of Wellington being ‘dead’ and past its prime – our video responds to this messaging by exploring our city’s rugged topography and unique charm, hopefully re-igniting a feeling that Poneke is a place where creativity is nurtured and celebrated,” says guitarist, Clarrie Macklin.
Lyrically, Shinbone is about living with a big dream in a small country on the edge of the world: “it’s the feeling of waiting for the ‘right time’ to start, while navigating the accompanying existential dread and artistic self-doubt,” says lead singer, Aeron Glasgow Keene. The music video is shot entirely with a phone camera aimed through a set of binoculars, alluding to “a sense of isolation and distance, while still being able to appreciate the beauty of your surroundings.”
Shinbone visits locations around the Wellington Region significant to the band; places of solace, reflection, and wonder. “There’s footage taken from lookouts in all the suburbs I’ve flatted in since the song was first written in 2014. Each place represents a chapter of our story,” says Aeron. “While I can sometimes feel a bit isolated from the rest of the world here, we're lucky enough to live in a city where whichever suburb you live in, it's at most a 30 minute walk to a lookout with a stunning view. I find that it helps to give me the perspective I need to stay inspired.”
Shinbone will be Oh Sweet Nothings’ first release following their debut EP Emergency Procedures, released in 2019. Since touring the North Island last summer, and surviving the great 2020 lockdown, the band has been working hard on follow-up projects on the down-low. Shinbone is the first of several releases planned for 2021. Stay tuned.
