An ode to Dillastrate’s love of music and a musicians’ life, Scorch celebrates the Christchurch duo’s passion for creating and performing music.
The vibe of the song pays homage to the era of conscious rap and neo soul featuring an off-kilter, soul-infused beat containing live instruments such as a grand piano, electric bass, acoustic drum kit. As a result, it sounds like it could have been a freshly rediscovered track from the golden era of hip-hop.
Scorch features rapper LUIS, who was introduced to the duo when they heard him perform at local Christchurch spot, Smokey T’s.
“H (H Kaa - Dillastrate) played the draft beats for Scorch on his phone and LUIS freestyled over them – this collaboration was born right there and then,” exclaims Dillastrate’s Tim Driver.
The collaboration between LUIS, Dillastrate (H Kaa, Tim Driver) and sound engineer Jamie Thomson emerged organically during some writing sessions in June 2020 and was based on a piano part first performed by Tim. It then evolved into this stunning finished track, Scorch.
“The second part of verse one speaks to how driven I am and how I envision my journey with music to go. The second verse focuses more on lyrical structure and word play to show what I can do lyrically, but also about how I want to go deeply into my musical journey and stay there for as long as possible,” says LUIS about the tune.
“We (H and Tim) still recall hearing that verse for the first time when it was recorded, with the first take being the final take selected, as well as the first time we had heard the verse. The scratch audio you can hear on the end of the track is H’s genuine reaction to hearing that verse for the first time, which had us all in shock about the extent of LUIS’s rap abilities.”
The Narrative EP is set to be a diverse collection of sounds that are woven together by Dillastrate’s idiosyncratic musical approach. Much like the previous single Party In My Head, the wonky hip-hop feel of Scorch is a slight departure stylistically from the other songs on the EP, but still feels like it fits right in.
Dillastrate performs live at the GoLive Festival at the Christchurch Town Hall on July 24 and at Spring Jam at The Powerstation in Auckland on August 31.
