WOMAD 2022; PlayDay Schedule and seven new STEAM Lab speakers announced

10 December 2021 - 0 Comments

Today, WOMAD New Zealand announces the 2022 PlayDay Schedule in what has become a welcome pre-Christmas tradition. From household names to keeping the delight of WOMAD's discovery element alive, the 2022 WOMAD lineup is the most diverse and worldly rich festival of the summer season. See your festival favourites perform twice, schedule your weekend around the exclusive one-off performances or discover your new favourite act. WOMAD New Zealand carefully prepares the three-day festival to ensure limited schedule clashes and ensure that festival attendees experience the most that WOMAD has to offer.

Opening the festival on Friday night with one-off performances is Dub-fusion elite Salmonella Dub and Brazillian DJ; Bobby Brazuka.

Internationally regarded as one of the world's finest live draws, the seven-piece musical juggernaut; Fat Freddy's Drop is scheduled to perform once on Saturday, as is the highly anticipated Jazz-Hip-Hop mastermind; Avantdale Bowling Club, Neo-Soul-Jazz artist; Hollie Smith, Lord Echo (DJ set) and RnB cultural warrior; Ria Hall.

Contemporary super-group; Fly My Pretties and the Dames of Aotearoa's Country music and comedy; Topp Twins are scheduled for exclusive one-off festival performances on Sunday.

"WOMAD would never be so cruel as to only play things once, so most acts put on repeat performances over the weekend, allowing you the chance to customise an itinerary that would rival an around the world music trip." - Rosie Morrison, The Spinoff.

Repeat performances from one of Aotearoa's most distinctive soul singers; Whirimako Black, modern R&B extraordinaire; Deva Mahal and the ethereal electronic; Dream Chambers are sure to delight, as are double performances from Nigerian-Kiwi rapper and producer; Mazbou Q and the Queen of New Zealand's roots and dancehall; Rubi Du.

Bulgarian Vocal group; Acapollinations, Cinematic-Jazz ensemble; Carnivorous Plant Society, Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland-based Brazilian musician; Ge Luz and Latin Electronic quartet; LatinAotearoa are all scheduled to perform more than once over the weekend.

The exciting drum troupe; IPU Kodama Japanese Drum Team, Pacific Contemporary Dance and storytelling group; Le Moana and vibrant Indian dance company; Mudra Dance, are making multiple welcome appearances.

Balkan Brass band; Niko Ne Zna, Flamenco guitarist and composer; Paul Bosauder presents the Tierra y Mar Flamenco Project, the stunning collaboration of New Zealand and Indian musicians; Shades of Shakti, Blues and Roots band; Swamp Thing. Plus, Bulgarian Folklore artist; TUi MAMAKi, World-Fusion Beats based; Weird Together, and Afro-Funk band; Yaw Asumadu and Ozi Ozaa will all be performing twice throughout the festival.

From when the gates open at 4.30 pm on Friday, March 18th, until the last act finishes at 11.45 pm Sunday, March 20th, the stunning 55-acre Brooklands Park and the Bowl of Brooklands are filled with thousands of happy people for a late summer indulgence in world music, food and dance.

The entire stage schedule will be released in January 2022, including the World Of Words, Taste The World, OMV STEAM Lab and on-site performance schedules.
